Job Description Summary

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Math Center supports SSU students by offering math and statistics tutoring. Additionally, math/stats peer tutors provide support to faculty by helping the students experience success in their math and statistics courses. To support the university community, especially departments with totally online degrees, tutors will provide online tutoring from the Math Center.

POSITION SUMMARY, ROUTINE TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tutors are responsible for cheerfully greeting and welcoming students as well as assisting them with math and statistics homework.

If tutors cannot answer students questions, then it is the tutors responsibility to find the course instructor or another faculty member and ask for help. Tutors are not allowed to send students away because they are unfamiliar with the math/stats course concepts.

Training will be provided for MicroSoft Office Teams Shifts, the Tutee Survey that students complete at the end of their tutoring session, as well as Bb Ultra Collaborate.

  • Preferred skills: Math/Stats peer tutors need to have a B or higher in Calculus and/or Stats.
  • Confidentiality expectations - tutors are not to discuss tutees with other tutors unless it is in real time for helping a student solve problems
  • Software Knowledge - Familiarity with Blackboard

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Registered full-time SSU student
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and follow instructions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and social media platforms
  • Follow SSU dress code policy
