The vision for the First-Gen Student Success Center (First-Gen Center) is to provide holistic support to FG students as they transition and progress through their college experience, with a focus on advancing equitable outcomes relating to retention, graduation, and sense of belonging. With 26% of UMTC undergraduate students identifying as first-gen, the Center works closely with key campus partners to provide coordinated and complimentary services and support that promote FG student success.

Position Overview

The Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC) will be part of a team that develops the operations, services and programs of the First-Gen Center. This position oversees and executes student-focused events and programming, supervises and mentors student employees/interns, and leads the daily services of the center.

The First-Gen Center is part of the Student Success team within the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE), a unit within the Executive Vice President and Provost. The SEC reports to Deon Newsom, Director of First-Gen Student Success Center.

Position Responsibilities

Program Management and Student Interns Supervision (60%)

  • Provide planning and support services to FG students by leading high-quality

customer service, program development, and student-centered services for the

First-Gen Center

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of student interns in completing various

projects and tasks for the Center (e.g., outreach, communications, programming,

and student lounge management)

  • Establish and facilitate daily operational procedures including technology, space,

purchasing, workflow, and office manuals to ensure seamless service delivery and

problem solve student concerns and office issues

  • Ensure UMN and OUE policies/procedures and practices are upheld
  • Meet with the Director to address operational efficiency and provide updates

regarding the work of the student interns

Student Engagement and Programming (35%)

  • Develop and execute campus-wide signature programming and student events to

foster community and promote student success including initial planning,

marketing, logistics and assessment

  • Coordinate outreach events for the First-Gen Center including orientation,

admissions, and other events

  • Gather, compare, and analyze data for events, programs and services to

determine overall effectiveness and make recommendations for future offerings,

including annual reporting

Professional Development, Service, and Other Duties (5%)

  • Engage in professional development and service activities related to the student

services profession, within the University of Minnesota community and beyond,

when appropriate

  • Participate in and represent the First-Gen Center on committees as assigned by

the Director

  • Perform various other duties as assigned

Position Details

  • Appointment: 100% time, 2-year temporary position
  • Work Environment: This position is expected to work on campus in the FG Center

located in Appleby Hall on the East Bank. Remote work days may be available as

the position evolves.

  • As a 2-yr temporary position, continuation will depend on renewed funding of the

First-Gen Student Success Center.

Qualifications

Required

  • BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of

education and relevant work experience to equal at least six years

  • Experience with project management and program implementation
  • Evidence of effective relationship-building, team-building, and oral/written

communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively and collaboratively with multiple

stakeholders

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse and respectful workplace that

welcomes and respects a diverse constituency

Preferred

  • Experience developing and executing services as well as programs that provide

support for college students, specifically FG students

  • Working knowledge of student development theory
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and collaborative, including demonstrated

problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work both independently and interdependently as part of a team
  • Experience with complex databases, preferably student data systems similar to

APLUS, also Google Workspace and social media platforms such as Instagram

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $25.00 - $25.97 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience. This is the allocated pay range available for this role. We are not able to go outside this range.

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment, 2-year temporary position
