Position Announcement

Can you look at an ordinary room and immediately see its hidden potential? Our campus project group is looking for a creative, detail-oriented Student Interior Decorator / Space Stylist to breathe new life into our central office and student waiting area.

This role is the ultimate test of staging and styling resourcefulness. We aren't buying a room full of new furniture or repainting the walls; instead, your mission is to work within our current footprint, furniture inventory, and established color palette to maximize the space. You will use your eye for layout, lighting, and accents to transform a standard university office into an organized, welcoming, and high-vibe environment for students and visitors alike. You will be paid $15.00 per hour.

What You'll Gain:

A real-world project to add to your portfolio showing a transformation with before-and-after photography assets that showcase your ability to elevate a corporate or academic space under strict real-world constraints.

Learn how to pitch design concepts, manage a micro-budget for styling accents, and execute a physical project on a timeline.

A tangible legacy by creating a space that directly improves the daily experience of every student and staff member who walks through the door.

Summary of Responsibilities

As the design and styling lead for this office refresh, you will:

  • Assess the current office layout and waiting area to identify bottlenecks, dead space, or layout clutter that hurts the welcoming atmosphere.

  • Map out an optimized furniture arrangement utilizing the existing desks, seating, and tables to maximize floor space, traffic flow, and professional appeal.

  • Select and strategically arrange small, budget-friendly decorative accents (e.g., plants, desk organization, wall frames, books, or accent textiles) that complement the current color palette.

  • Evaluate current lighting and propose adjustments (such as repositioning floor lamps, utilizing natural light, or managing glare) to create a warmer, less clinical waiting environment.

  • Create a simple, quick "Room Care" sheet for office staff, so the space stays organized, styled, and clutter-free long after your project is complete.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Utah Valley University (UVU).
  • A strong intuitive eye for balance, symmetry, color matching, and interior styling.
  • The ability to look at existing limitations (fixed furniture, set wall colors) as a creative prompt rather than a roadblock.
  • Excellent physical organization skills; someone who naturally declutters and finds a functional place for everything.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework or personal interest in Interior Design, Architecture, Facilities Management, Theater Set Design, or Visual Merchandising.
  • Experience with digital mood-boarding or basic layout sketching tools (e.g., Canva, Pinterest boards, SketchUp, or hand-drawn floor plans).
  • Prior experience staging spaces, styling events, or managing visual displays.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Represent UVU with professionalism when interacting with industry partners.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Strong collaboration with students from other disciplines.
  • Strong discipline, flexibility, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

About Company

Utah Valley University was established in 1941 as Central Utah Vocational School (CUVS) with the primary function of providing war production training. CUVS was part of the Provo School District located in south Provo. The institution received a state appropriation in March 1945 of $50,000 to operate for the 1945-1947 biennium. In 1947, the school received funding as a permanent state institution. A new site for the school was acquired on University Avenue in Provo in 1948; in the 1952, the state appropriated funding for the first construction on that site. As enrollments grew, the state acquired over 185 acres in southwest Orem and the first building was completed in 1977. Today, the University’s facilities consist of a combined total of 412 acres with 50 buildings with campuses in Orem, Provo, and Heber City and property in Vineyard and at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi.
