DEFINITION

STOCKTON YOUTH ENVIORNMENTAL STEWARDSHIP (SYES) STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

HOURLY RATE: $19/hour

PART-TIME OPPORTUNITY: Twelve (12) hours per week for 52 weeks

The Youth Environmental Leadership Assistant supports the implementation of the Stockton Youth Environmental Stewardship (SYES) program. This role provides hands-on experience in environmental education, community engagement, and municipal program operations. Assistants serve as peer mentors to middle school participants and help facilitate cleanup events, workshops, and program activities.

  • Be a former Y.E.S.S program participant (Preferred)

This is an At-Will (unclassified/unrepresented) position. Only those applicants who best fit the needs of the City will be referred to the hiring department. Under close supervision, participates in on-the-job training; assists City departments in providing a wide variety of services; may participate in a Student Worker Program for students between the ages of 16-21; and performs related duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This single classification is used for temporary appointment(s) to provide job training for regularly enrolled or continuing students. The City of Stockton's Internship Program is designed to give students an inside look at the City of Stockton's employment opportunities and provide public sector job experience by giving interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff. This position may also be used within the Student Worker Program to provide students between the ages of 16-21 the opportunity to gain employment experiences. Internship and Student Worker participants will vary widely based on the training assignment and the department program needs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

  • Assist ESO staff with planning and delivering SYES curriculum activities
  • Lead small groups of youth during cleanup events, workshops, and field activities
  • Prepare program materials, tool kits, safety gear, and event supplies
  • Support data collection, including attendance, cleanup metrics, and participant feedback
  • Help coordinate community outreach and family-inclusive cleanup events
  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating professionalism, teamwork, and civic pride
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of program sites
  • Participate in leadership training and staff development sessions

  • Interest in environmental stewardship, public service, or community engagement
  • Ability to work collaboratively with youth and adults
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to the full program schedule
