Summary

Plans, coordinates, advises, and performs a variety of services supporting Associated Students leadership and governance activities including links to related social, cultural, and educational programs and events. Administers leadership education, service learning, and community service program experiences, working closely with students, faculty, and staff to assemble, populate, and implement services.

Distinguishing Career Features

The Student Leadership Coordinator serves as a technical and procedural advisor as well as trainer and facilitator to enhance students capabilities in student government, organizing and carrying out student activities, and to support outreach and prospective student recruitment. Advancement to this level requires that incumbents in this role will demonstrate skills in outreach, conducting in service training, and understand procedures for organizing and conducting business, elections, and events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:

  1. Plans, organizes, and facilitates activities and programs to develop skills in student leaders such as, but not limited to, ente1iainment, cultural events, ice breakers, team building, and experiences to practice learned skills.

  2. Advises specific branches (i.e. Student Senate, Executive Board, Standing Committees, etc.) of the Associated Student Organization (ASO) on the process of identifying, planning, and implementing successful and well-attended educational, social, and cultural activities for students. Serves as an advisor at branch meetings of ASO as assigned and interprets college policies and standards as it relates to meetings, events, and activities.

  3. Coordinates and advises on the processes required for student elections including identification of candidates, organization of balloting, marketing and promoting, counting, and verifying election results.

  4. Coordinates and attends ASO and college-sponsored student activities and conferences both on- and off-campus locales. Arranges for travel to off-campus events and conferences. Facilitates evaluations for events attended.

  5. Develops, coordinates, and presents leadership workshops and training sessions that address character formation, student growth, and leadership development. Plans and conducts ASO retreat activities.

  6. Coordinates service-learning and volunteer experiences on campus and in the surrounding community.

  7. Interprets and upholds college policies and standards pertaining to the assigned areas of responsibility (i.e. participato1y governance, ASO, etc.).

  8. Assists student government to develop an annual ASO budget, monitors expenditures and record keeping, and provides feedback to students on financial management.

  9. Tracks assigned District and/or college budgets. Monitors and reconciles various accounts and statements, records expenses, runs and provides status updates utilizing various statistical repo11s; identifies and analyzes discrepancies and errors. Advises administrator and/or manager related to necessary corrections.

  10. Develops and produces informational materials and publications supporting student activities. Works with student leadership to generate and follow up on ideas and the processes that result in well-executed activities.

  11. Works with student governance to identify and recommend student activity policies and procedures. Advises student leaders on due process and meeting protocols. 12. Working with outside businesses and community-based organizations, identifies and develops proposals for and actual experiences so that student leaders can develop skills.

  12. Develops and conducts period surveys related to students satisfaction from activities, programs, and outcomes derived from leadership development activities and events. Research, compiles, and analyzes data for assessing program effectiveness and change.

  13. Attends conferences and workshops relating to student leadership, governance, and recruitment to generate new ideas, give students experience, and support recruitment.

  14. Updates, prepares, and coordinates publication of documents relevant to the assigned area. Drafts correspondence and other documents of a complex nature. Formats documents and edits for grammar, spelling, accessibility, and accuracy. Takes notes and types various documents such as correspondence, reports, and memos. 16. May serve as advisor and chaperone for ASO, ICC, and Student Life & Leadership field trips, conferences, conventions, and all other off-campus student trips as directed or assigned by the assigned supervisor. Organizes and manages trip planning and schedules.

  15. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

Education and Experience

The position typically requires a Bachelors degree in a counseling, student development, education, or business discipline. Two years of experience in a student services environment. Additional progressive experience in student services along with an Associates degree may be accepted.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors or outdoors where health and safety considerations are minimal, but exist from sustained digital physical movements. May require work during evening and weekend hours based on the needs of the department.

Conditions of Employment

This recruitment is for one categorically funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. This position is grant funded; continuation of this position is contingent on funds available in the grant. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the needs of the department. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. (Salary Range EE-121)

Pay Philosophy:

Comprehensive Medical, Dental and Vision

We know that the health of our employees and their families is a priority. Thats why we offer extensive health care benefits to benefits-eligible employees. We offer the Districts Anthem Blue Cross PPO plan as well as three HMOs, Blue Shield Access Plus, Blue Shield TRIO, and Kaiser Permanente. We also provide District-paid dental and vision insurance.

Benefits are available to regular permanent employees working 20 or more hours per week. Benefits are not available to employees working less than 20 hours per week, temporary, hourly, or other short-term employees.

District-paid Life Insurance

The District provides Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance benefits, underwritten by VOYA. This district-paid benefit is equal to one time your annual salary and remains in effect until age 70. At age 70, your benefit is reduced to half.

District-paid Disability Benefits

Coast Community College District provides both a short-term disability benefit and long-term disability benefit to employees working 20 or more hours per week who are unable to work because of disability due to illness, injury, or maternity.

Sabbatical Leaves

Faculty members are encouraged to pursue professional growth leading to the development of increased competence and the improvement of instruction and/or redirection in their current teaching discipline. The Districts sabbatical leave program is designed to assist in this pursuit and is available on a semester basis after completing six consecutive years of service.

Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is the governing body at each of our colleges for making recommendations to administration and to our Board of Trustees with respect to academic and professional matters. The Senate consists of elected faculty and has the responsibility for matters related to curriculum and general academic policy.

Time to Refuel

Vacation - Classified employees earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Confidential, Educational Administrators, and Classified Managers earn 22 days of vacation each fiscal year. Accrued vacation is prorated for all employee categories working less than full-time.

Sick Leave - All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your CalPERS or CalSTRS retirement pension benefit.

Holidays - The Coast Community College District observes 22 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave - Coast Community College District grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations

Pension Plans - The Coast Community College District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in the Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.

Medical Benefits After Retirement - It is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees, who retire from the District at age 60 or older and with fifteen or more years of service, be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement plan is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities - The Coast Community College District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of their salary deposited to a 403b tax-sheltered annuity plan or an approved 457 deferred compensation plan.

Schools First Federal Credit Union - The Schools First Federal Credit Union is a federally insured, full service, financial cooperative that is a not-for-profit organization. Earnings are used to benefit all members to provide a full range of financial services and offerings.
