Position Introduction:
The Student Library Assistant (SLA) in Circulation Services is an undergraduate student position that staffs the circulation desks at the west and south entrances to Bizzell; during all hours that the library is open to the public. The circulation desk is often the first point of contact library users and visitors have with the library; SLAs must represent it in a positive and helpful manner.
Successful hires can expect to receive training to build knowledge of:
- University Libraries policies
- The Alma LSP (Library Service Platform)
- Other digital resources; necessary for directing and assisting users.
Job Duties:
- Working with the public, in person or by phone, to answer inquiries about resources within University Libraries
- Transferring users; to specialized departments or services
- Using The Alma LSP, the LC, Dewey call number systems, and various digital resources to help users locate library materials
- Checking out and discharging library materials
- Shelving and retrieving ''Reserves'' books and technology items
- Ongoing training and review to ensure retention of policies and procedures
- Possible special projects or professional development options; based on library need, coordinated with a supervisor
Required Education:
Must be enrolled in the Fall 2026 semester as a student in good standing at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.
Department Preferences:
- Previous library and customer service experience
- Ability and willingness to work weekends
- Ability and willingness to work during Spring Break, Summer Intersession, Thanksgiving Break, and/or Winter Intersession
- Ability and willingness to work an established schedule that may include early mornings, late nights, and weekends
- Sufficient language skills to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate clearly with library users
- Ability to read labels for shelving
- Good interpersonal communication skills
