Job Description

Alabama State University, Office of Student Life, invites applications for the position of Student Life Specialist. This position serves as the primary advisor and coordinator for the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) and is responsible for the planning and execution of the Hornet Leadership Academy (HLA), including developing leadership learning tracks, identifying and securing speakers and facilitators, coordinating educational sessions, and managing program logistics. The Student Life Specialist also oversees the coordination, scheduling, supervision, and professional development of 20-Hour Students assigned to the Office of Student Life. In addition, the position provides essential administrative and operational support for the Office of Student Life, including managing daily office operations, departmental correspondence, calendars, meetings, records, purchasing and financial documentation, and other administrative processes. The position also supports departmental communications and serves as the social media manager for assigned Student Life programs and initiatives. This position reports directly to the Director of Student Life.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary advisor and coordinator for the Leadership Development Institute (LDI), overseeing day-to-day operations, student advising and mentorship, recruitment, programming, scheduling, communications, records, and leadership development initiatives.
  • Serve as the lead planner and coordinator for the Hornet Leadership Academy (HLA), including developing student leadership learning tracks and educational sessions; identifying and securing speakers, presenters, and facilitators; coordinating schedules and program content; managing facilities, meals, transportation, technology, materials, and other logistics; and assessing the overall effectiveness of the Academy.
  • Coordinate and supervise 20-Hour Students assigned to the Office of Student Life, including scheduling, work assignments, attendance, training, professional development, performance monitoring, and deployment of student employees to support office operations, programs, events, and special projects.
  • Provide comprehensive administrative and operational support for the Office of Student Life, including managing departmental calendars, meetings, correspondence, records, reports, presentations, and documentation; assisting with PeopleSoft financial processes, purchasing, requisitions, invoices, travel, contracts, and budget documentation; and supporting the efficient daily operation of the office.
  • Serve as the social media manager for assigned Student Life departments, programs, and initiatives, including developing and maintaining social media and communications calendars, creating and publishing digital content, promoting programs and student accomplishments, and maintaining a consistent and professional digital presence; perform other related duties as assigned and support evening and weekend programs when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Masters degree preferred, but not required, in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, Public Administration, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in student affairs, student activities, leadership development, higher education administration, program coordination, office administration, or a related area preferred.
  • Knowledge of student development principles, leadership development practices, and student engagement strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, and support college students and student leaders.
  • Ability to develop educational programming, learning outcomes, leadership tracks, workshops, trainings, and developmental experiences for college students.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, delegate assignments to, and provide guidance to student employees.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, programs, and deadlines.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, digital content creation, video editing software, and other digital communication tools.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional social media and departmental communications.
  • Strong customer care orientation and the ability to interact professionally with students, families, faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and manage assigned responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of the Office of Student Life and Division of Student Affairs.

OTHER SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

This position requires regular interaction with students, student employees, faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners. The Student Life Specialist must be able to manage multiple programs and administrative responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced university environment. Evening and weekend work may be required to support the Leadership Development Institute, Hornet Leadership Academy, Student Life programs, special events, and university-wide activities.
