Media Services at Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is hiring a student employee for the upcoming Fall & Spring semesters. Media Services fosters equitable opportunities for interdisciplinary discovery, innovative scholarship, and skill development through creative play with multimedia collections and media tools. Federal Work Study is preferred for this position. We'll be reviewing applications, with a planned start date just before or near the start of the semester.

Student Library Workers in Media Services typically work 8-11 hours per week, although hours + schedule are based on availability. We're looking for students with general availability Monday through Friday, daytime to evening hours (between 8:30am to 6:00pm), plus Sundays (12:00pm to 6pm). Fill-in hours may also occur during the daytime, evening shifts (closing at 6pm), or weekend shifts (Sundays btw 12pm-6pm).

Starting salary: $12.00/hour ($1 increase per year/2 semesters upon returning)

About Us:

This position will help student employees demonstrate and cultivate the career readiness competencies in accordance with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

Typical job duties would include:

  • Customer service: Checking out books & media materials to patrons, assisting patrons locate microforms & newspapers materials, retrieving music & media materials from the closed stacks, answering directional or technology questions like, "How many printers are there in the library?" or "How do I use the book scanner?".
  • Basic research skills: Answering research questions like, "I'm looking for books about Britney Spears, can you help me?" or "Do you have any musical scores for piano composed by Florence Price?" or "If I'm trying to find newspaper articles from the Times Picayune written about Entergy New Orleans, where is the best place to look?".
  • Technical skills: Assisting patrons with creative technology (like GoPro cameras, microphones, and podcasting equipment), microform readers, and media listening/viewing equipment. Student employees also assist with troubleshooting when issues arise.
  • Clerical: Shifting materials to make room for new items, filing and labeling materials, re-shelving microform & media materials as needed.
