Job Summary:

Under the guidance and supervision of a Registered Nurse Preceptor, the Student Nurse / Extern / Cooperative renders care to patients and assists in performing various activities when caring for the personal needs and comforts of patients. Utilizes experience to enhance clinical and theoretical knowledge.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assists with assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care of assigned patients under the guidance and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Assists with data collection to formulate a nursing history.
  • Participates in therapeutic communication with patient and/or significant other.
  • Includes all available, pertinent information in assessment.
  • Communicates assessment information to responsible Registered Nurse to assist in developing a discharge plan.
  • Answers patients’ call bells to determine their needs.
  • Provides direct care using hygienic measures to assigned patients such as: taking vital signs, bathing, skin massage, mouth, hair, nail and eye care, bed making, positioning patients and maintaining neatness and safety of the environment.
  • Collects specimens (urine, stool, sputum) according to established procedures.
  • Uses proper body mechanics and body alignment in care of patients.
  • Performs treatments as outlined in competency lists.
  • Contributes to Interdisciplinary Patient Care Plan under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • Assists in developing realistic short and long-term goals.
  • Follows the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Plan as written by the Registered Nurse.
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a professional manner paying particular attention to “customer relations”.
  • Strives to continuously enhance the quality of service and cost effectiveness of the department, giving particular attention to infection control and a safe work environment.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality consistent with Hospital policy.
  • Demonstrates Interest in expanding nursing skills through observing, assisting and participating.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Enrolled in an accredited nursing program to prepare candidates for Registered Nurse licensure.
  • Experience of one clinical rotation in an acute care setting. 
  • Externship requires availability of a minimum of 6 months prior to expected date of graduation.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, giving particular attention to any unique physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Verbal ability to communicate with patients and health-care team and to understand instructions received.
  • Ability to detect, and report changes in patient’s condition.
  • Knowledge of CPR, hospital nursing practices, infection control procedures, and medical terminology.
  • Demonstrates behaviors that contribute to a positive working environment.
  • Good communication skills.
