The intern will support the Office of Community Health, Education & Wellness (CHEW) in advancing community health, wellness, inclusion, and population health initiatives across the organization. This role offers exposure to community engagement, program development, health education, and cross-functional collaboration within a health system setting.

The intern will participate in team meetings, develop projects, support existing projects, and contribute to deliverables aligned with departmental priorities. This experience provides an opportunity to understand how community health programs are designed, implemented and evaluated.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support coordination and execution of community health and wellness initiatives
  • Assist with planning and logistics for community meetings, outreach events, and educational programs
  • Contribute to the development of internal and external communications, including presentations, newsletters, and reports
  • Conduct research on community health topics, population needs, and best practices
  • Participate in internal staff meetings and cross-departmental collaborations
  • Support documentation and tracking of program activities and outcomes
  • Provide general administrative support as needed

Learning Objectives / Skill Development

  • Gain understanding of community health strategies and principles based on the following key programs: Tobacco Treatment Services, Diabetes Prevention, Fresh Rx, Community Health Worker Hub, Women-Inspired Neighborhood (WIN) Network :Detroit, LiveWell, and the Community Health Hub.
  • Learn how health programs are developed, implemented, and evaluated
  • Develop strong communication, research, and organizational skills
  • Build experience in community engagement and program coordination
  • Strengthen collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary team environment

Reporting Structure

The intern will report to CHEW team members and receive guidance on assigned projects and deliverables. Day-to-day responsibilities may vary depending on departmental priorities and community needs.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Public Health, Health Administration, Social Work, or a related field
  • Focus area in community health, wellness and/or health education
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and adaptable
  • Motivated to support initiatives that improve community health outcomes
