General Summary:
Oglethorpe University seeks a Student Success Advisor who is passionate about higher education and providing an exceptional student experience. We seek a motivated professional with excellent customer-service skills, a passion for intercultural and experiential learning, and a desire to help a demographically diverse community of students achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. Reporting to Assistant Dean & Director of Student Success, the Student Success Advisor will provide foundational support in the development of a holistic, proactive, and strategic model of student development and academic advising. Focused on the implementation of high-impact practices, the Student Success Advisor will lead the delivery of academic support services and facilitate academic interventions and coaching designed to significantly improve retention, progression, and graduation rates, and help each student flourish and achieve the institution's motto to "Make a Life. Make a Living. Make a Difference."
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide educational guidance and coaching to assist students in developing meaningful educational goals that are tailored to their needs and consistent with personal interests, values, and abilities.
- Advise students concerning schedules, major and academic requirements, academic support and campus resources, academic standing, experiential learning pathways, and campus engagement.
- Understand and interpret University policies and procedures as related to academic advising; work closely with academic affairs and liaise effectively with faculty.
- Provide appropriate campus referrals, maintain a catalog of campus and community resources or services available; represent the Office of Student Success in recruitment activities and student support initiatives.
- Monitor and track registration and academic performance metrics for assigned student populations as it relates to retention, progression, and graduation rates.
- Assist in student academic and behavioral interventions through Early Alerts, and Petrel Assessment and Care Team (PACT) cases.
- Support the ongoing assessment and best practices of academic advising and success coaching to ensure that these are aligned with student goals, needs, and institutional learning outcomes.
- Support ongoing training and professional development activities with campus partners; adhere to and maintain academic advising procedural guide and training manual.
- Serve on university-wide committees, attend events as needed, and support the integration of student success initiatives.
- Each advisor will lead efforts focused on retention and persistence broadly as a member of the Student Success team and assigned a functional area responsibility to lead services and programs for international students (DSO), or global learning including education abroad, or learning support/academic skills interventions/case management.
Other Duties
- Participate in institutional planning processes, divisional meetings, and represent Academic Affairs on request at gatherings that include multiple functional areas.
- Participate in major Academic Affairs and University events such as Orientation and Commencement.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
- 1 year of experience in academic advising, higher education administration, or social services
- Knowledge of best practices in academic advising, specifically serving a diverse student body
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate openly, honestly, and respectfully across diverse cultural backgrounds; ability to diffuse emotional or tense situations and offer viable solutions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite strong technical proficiency with a demonstrated ability to work across multiple software platforms simultaneously
- Strong organizational skills and experience prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
- Familiarity with student information systems and regulatory frameworks in higher education including FERPA, ADA, SEVIS, and Title IX
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident qualified to serve as DSO for SEVIS purposes

Preferred Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Master's degree in education, business, or a field prioritizing professional practices to support human development and organizational health
- 3 years professional experience in academic advising, student affairs, or higher education administration
- Experience working with culturally diverse communities
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Proficiency with Ellucian student information systems and regulatory frameworks in higher education including FERPA, ADA, SEVIS, and Title IX
- Use of best practices in academic advising, specifically serving a diverse student body
- Demonstrated history of professional experiences showing a commitment to inclusive excellence
- Experience living and/or studying abroad
Work Environment:
Normal use of office equipment, sitting at a desk, walking or standing, occasional lifting (<25 lbs).
Occasional nights and weekends may be required.
This position is full-time in person. Occasional remote work may be possible when business operations permit.
