General Statement of Job Function

The Student Success Advisor guides and assists students toward successful degree completion and the attainment of educational goals. This position is a key component in student retention and persistence. While the campus is in Littleton, Denver Seminary students are in varying regions both inside and outside of Colorado. As a result, this position requires high levels of accurate, concise communication (email, phone, and in person, depending on the student's location). The Student Success Advisor role is responsible for one specific group of students, organized by degree program.

Essential Functions

  • Provides academic advising through proactive and timely enrollment communication and support, beginning in the student's first semester.
  • Continuously monitors students' academic progress by updating and maintaining degree audits, documenting all advising communication in Slate, including any exceptions to published program requirements or policies, advising in course selection, and tracking the adherence to the degree plan to assist the student in accomplishing their academic and vocational goals.
  • Proactively supports students who may experience roadblocks to reenrollment in an attempt to keep them in the seminary community.
  • Works with the advising team on strategic retention projects.
  • Act as a first point of contact and conduct questions regarding Student Success and Student Care, guiding students to the appropriate person/department to meet their needs throughout the seminary.
  • Develops and maintains degree paths and related advising tools for students.
  • Help to maintain the student record and any changes to the student's program, campus, or student status in coordination with the Office of the Registrar.
  • Advocates for student needs related to course rotation information, schedules, and other resource materials to promote student success.
  • Collaborate with other departments to connect students with academic, mentoring, and/or resources (including the library, ministry residency, and Student Care) in order to help them achieve their academic goals.
  • Actively monitors international students' academic progress, reports registration to SEVIS, and serves as an official designated school official (DSO).
  • Work directly with the admissions counselors to provide a smooth handoff for first-semester students.
  • Maintains the records and systems related to student enrollment with discretion and accuracy in accordance with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Utilizes technology to improve the quality of service to students and other constituencies and to present clear communication regarding academic policies and requirements.
  • Assist students with student portal resources and online registration.
  • Manages the creation of academic advising resources for the continuing student population.
  • Research continuing student enrollment and retention trends.
  • Creates training materials, policies, and procedures for the advising team.

Education/Training

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Previous advising, student service, higher education, public relations, customer service, or similar experience highly preferred.
  • Must be able to work well individually and in team settings, and should possess an outgoing, dynamic, and flexible character.

  • Agreement with Denver Seminary's Statement of Faith
  • A willingness to create long-term relationships with students and assist them from their first semester through graduation.
  • Excellent, clear, and concise communication skills, written and oral, with specific attention to detail
  • Ability to be a creative, out-of-the-box thinker who takes initiative to find solutions while clarifying and enforcing Denver Seminary's expectations and policies.
  • Willingness to work directly alongside the admissions counselors, providing a direct counterpart to the work they do with incoming students
  • Servant's heart and customer focus with an attitude of hospitality and generosity
  • Flexibility, a teachable spirit, and openness to change; ability to proactively locate appropriate resources to assist with unfamiliar situations; confidence in asking questions, and ability to recognize and learn from mistakes.
  • Ability to self-manage, self-motivate, and operate with discretion and professionalism

Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Normal office working conditions, including computer usage, may require occasional standing, walking, long periods of sitting, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
