The Student Success Advisor is responsible for advising undergraduate Nursing students and managing advisee student records. Responsibilities include academic advising and maintaining advising records. Aligned with MUCN strategic plan to promote excellence in learning and to increase diversity, equity and inclusion, this position plays an integral role in building a sense of community and belonging within the College and supporting student retention, persistence, and success to graduation through support of student programming.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as student success advisor for a caseload of students through traditional academic advising as well as high touch on-going wrap around student support to address students' academic, personal, mental, financial and spiritual needs.
Develop and maintain connections across campus and to external partners such as Counseling Center, Educational Services, Disability Services, Student Development and Financial Aid to develop resources for students.
Collaborate with student services team to enhance student engagement and outreach.
Work closely with other student support programs such as Project Beyond-2, Educational Opportunity Program, All In Milwaukee to increase student success and retention of diverse students. Work with these programs and others to support the recruitment, retention, academic success and graduation of disadvantaged and underrepresented minority nursing students to improve workforce diversity.
Proactively monitor student academic progress, appropriate course selection and college requirements to ensure timely intervention and graduation.
Collaborate with faculty to provide holistic support for students and reinforce strategies for success within each course.
Monitor, track, and maintain accurate records of all advising activities.
Maintain, update, and monitor academic program plans of assigned advisees to ensure correct course projections and to support student retention tracking.
Interpret and advise students on university and college policies, curriculum requirement, and procedures.
Serve as primary contact for advisees with inquiries about registration and academic forms, and secondary contact for scholarship applications.
Coordinate scrubs ordering and CPR classes, create a scrubs lending/recycling program, oversee the student CNA application process.
Support college events such as graduation and commitment to profession ceremony by staffing various events.
Serve on University and College committees
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor's degree
1-3 years of successful experience in academic advising, teaching, education, counseling, or student affairs
Experience working with students or in academic affairs including advising, admissions, teaching and/or student support
Computer and database management skills. (Intermediate to expert computer skills with Access, Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe; SharePoint)
Technical writing skills/experience
Ability to organize, coordinate, and prioritize work effectively
Strong collaboration, communication, presentation, & interpersonal skills
Experience in development and execution student facing events or programs
Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, families, faculty, and campus departments
Requires the ability to utilize tact and proper judgement while providing academic support to students, including an understanding of confidentiality and ability to appropriately enforce the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)
Strong interest in providing positive student learning environment and promoting student success
Ability to effectively represent the College of Nursing professionally to diverse constituencies including but not limited to prospective applicants and their families, alumni, and other College and University officials
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Master's degree or relevant work experience in student affairs, or related field
Experience working with underrepresented, first generation and diverse college students
Experience working with social determinants of education and health (SDE/SDH)
Familiarity with academic and university settings is strongly preferred
Knowledge of student development theories, retention, and student success principles
Experience with recruitment and public speaking
Knowledge of university and data analytics software such as Civitas, EAB, Peoplesoft and ImageNow
Familiarity with healthcare field
