Position Summary

Authority

The Student Success and Accessibility Coordinator serves as the primary administrator for student mental health initiatives and student Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. This position is responsible for leading, developing, and managing a comprehensive counseling program, as well as a peer navigation program, that facilitates the educational, personal, social, and career development of a diverse student population. The Student Success and Accessibility Coordinator works collaboratively with all departments and external stakeholders to mitigate barriers to mental wellness and student success. This position reports directly to the Dean of Students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities

At a minimum, the essential functions of the Student Success and Accessibility Coordinator are to:

  • Provide crisis intervention and mental health first aid for students experiencing immediate mental health emergencies or personal trauma.
  • Develop and execute a cohesive strategy for internal and external stakeholders to support the College's counseling and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) services.
  • Manage contracts and partnerships with local mental health agencies and healthcare providers to create a seamless referral network for students requiring long-term clinical care outside the Colleges scope.
  • Conduct follow-up evaluations for every student served to track success rates and prepare terminal summary reports.
  • Develop and maintain a secure, confidential system for student medical documentation in strict accordance with FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
  • Serve as the primary institutional authority for ADA and Section 504 compliance to ensure all programs and facilities are accessible.
  • Facilitate the intake and placement of students through various assessments and provide expert advisement, including the use of UWill and/or external services.
  • Coordinate with faculty, staff, and other support programs across all College campuses and sites to synchronize counseling and advising services.
  • Establish and lead an institutional "Early Alert" system to identify at-risk students and provide timely intervention before academic failure occurs.
  • Facilitate the formal grievance process for students who feel their accommodations have not been met or who experience discrimination.
  • Coordinate and provide proactive counseling to students on academic probation to assist with improvement tactics.
  • Attend regular training to remain current on new interpretations of the ADA and evolving student success strategies.
  • Coordinate with the Registrar's Office to ensure that academic accommodations do not compromise the fundamental requirements of the College's curriculum.
  • Develop, lead, and manage a peer navigation program dedicated to identifying barriers and assisting students with college and career success.
  • Lead and/or assist with training sessions for student leaders and campus organizations to foster a more engaged and welcoming campus climate.
  • Develop specific outreach programs for non-traditional students, veterans, and students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to ensure equitable access to support services.
  • Manage the department's budget to ensure sufficient resources for ADA technology (e.g., screen readers, captioning services) and mental wellness resources.
  • Prepare regular reports for the Dean of Students and President that analyze trends in student needs and the effectiveness of current interventions.
  • Oversee production, printing, and distribution of reports relevant to the success of this role.
  • Represent the College on various local and state committee(s), task force(s), and/or professional organizations to advance the institution's mission and vison.
  • Actively participate in staff, division, and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Perform any other task(s) required by the Dean of Students or President.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong skills in conflict resolution, sound judgment, and the ability to successfully handle high-pressure situations.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and FERPA/HIPAA privacy regulations.
  • Excellent organizational skills, being attentive to detail, and having the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Respect for authority and medical/College regulations without overrides from personal preference.
  • Certification and/or understanding of Mental Health First Aid.
  • Identification of various addictions and referral/rehabilitation services.
  • Willingness and understanding of the need to be flexible with work schedule as workload dictates.
  • Understanding and maintenance of confidentiality and professional integrity.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, internal and external to the College.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Minimum of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in counseling, guidance, psychology, social work, or a closely related field is required.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in counseling and ADA compliance at the secondary, postsecondary or corporate and/or nonprofit sector is preferred.

Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a related role; licensed professional counselor (LPC) or Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of Alabama; and three (3) years of experience in a related role in higher education is preferred.

Sick Leave

All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
