JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Student Support Specialist - Attendance

REPORTS TO: Building Principal or designee

UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Represented

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The focus of this position will be to increase the number of students successfully completing high school by assisting in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of attendance systems of support. This includes providing support to the principal and assistance principals in the monitoring of attendance and minor attendance-related discipline issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with student attendance related issues, problems, and concerns.
  • Initiate contact and maintain ongoing supervision with students having attendance problems and follow-up with parents.
  • Make daily phone contact with parents and students who are truant (tardy and/or absent). Perform follow up contacts with parent or guardian unable to be reached by telephone by driving to other district locations and/or students' homes and provide information concerning student attendance procedures.
  • Meet with students to discuss attendance issues.
  • Meet with the Principal or Assistant Principal(s) to identify students having attendance problems and discuss concerns and resolutions.
  • Provide positive reinforcement to students who improve attendance.
  • Meet with parents and student to explain and sign attendance contracts.
  • Maintain necessary records and data, prepare and process written materials and documents for the purpose of disseminating information regarding students' attendance.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and oversight of the high school attendance and related behavior policies.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and coordination of school-wide attendance programs at Sunnyside High School.
  • File appropriate BECCA paperwork on students that have not complied with school interventions for improving student attendance.
  • Attend appropriate court hearings regarding student in violation of the BECCA laws.
  • Assist with general supervision of students.
  • Assist in providing appropriate professional development to assist staff in attendance procedures.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise students on campus and at activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Associate of Arts Degree preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Able to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.

Bilingual/Biliterate in English/Spanish preferred

Demonstrated abilities in communication and effective human relations skills

Successful experience and demonstrated interest in working with youth and community

Licenses/Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Washington driver's license and the ability to maintain qualification for

Insurance coverage.

Social Security Card.

WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
