Department Bio - Academic Commons (AC) is the one-stop shop for students and the GW community to connect with academic resources in Gelman Library and throughout the university. The Academic Commons Peer Tutoring Program offers tutoring support to a variety of courses primarily at the 1000 and 2000 levels across the curriculum. The courses most commonly tutored in the AC include, but are not limited to CHEM, ECON, MATH, and PHYS. The tutoring program is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and offers high-quality support to students.
Position Specific Summary - This position will begin in the FALL 2026 semester and is for the 26-27 school year. Tutors complete comprehensive training, preparing them to become effective peer educators. By participating in training and completing 25 hours of tutoring, AC tutors earn a prestigious certification from the CRLA. Tutors meet with students in one-on-one and small group settings at a scheduled time and location. To help support students in their academic coursework, tutors draw on their own experience and implement research-based techniques illustrated in training. As a result, tutors learn, practice and refine valuable communication, critical thinking and study skills, as well as gain a deeper understanding of course content. Tutors also hone leadership and collaboration skills in their Academic Commons work by contributing to a variety of projects (outreach, marketing, newsletters, etc.)
Standard Position Description - The student will provide tutoring services for GW students or the DC community. Tasks may include: preparing tutoring lesson plans, teaching study skills, providing feedback on written papers or projects, tutoring in small groups, one-on-one, or virtually, providing supplemental education for courses and subject matters. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.

Required Qualifications - This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided (Students working in an instructional capacity should be very familiar with the subject area in which they are working).
Preferred Qualifications - Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at GW GPA of at least 3.0 B+ or better in each course they support A faculty reference for the subject areas they tutor Previous tutoring, teaching, or customer service experience, and/or education coursework (ex. GWTeach) may be helpful.
