EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree in Counseling from an accredited college or university

CERTIFICATIONS/ LICENSE:

Valid Texas Certificate by the State Board for Educator Certification as a School Counselor

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:

Identify, counsel, support, and refer students who need assistance with issues interfering with optimal performance. Provide a confidential, professional response to students and their families to support students .

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Collaborates with Campus Counselors on the development of the Campus Comprehensive School Counseling Program.

2. Within the Campus Comprehensive School Counseling Program, develops and implements programs including but not limited to:

a. Suicide and non-suicidal self-injury prevention and education

b. Alcohol, tobacco, vaping, and other drug use prevention and education

c. Healthy relationship awareness and education

d. Relationship abuse prevention and education

e. Bullying awareness and prevention

f. Conflict resolution and mediation training and implementation

3. Consults on Emergency Mental Health protocols for students enduring suicidal thoughts or behaviors; homicidal thoughts or behaviors, non-suicidal self-injury behaviors, and other emergency mental health concerns.

4. Provides individual responsive service counseling to students individually in a brief context when barriers inhibit a student's ability to achieve academic, post-secondary and social/emotional success.

5. Uses data to determine needs and provide group counseling for students facing similar barriers to academic or social/emotional development.

6. Within the Campus Comprehensive School Counseling Program, collaborates, develops and implements guidance curriculum for students at all grade levels according to the requirements of the Texas Education Code of required content.

7. Within the Campus Comprehensive School Counseling Program, collaborates, develops and implements psycho-educational presentations for campus staff, teachers and administration including:

a. Suicide Prevention

b. Child Abuse Reporting Requirements

c. Trauma and Grief Informed Practices for educators

d. Mental Health Awareness

8. Coordinates resources for students' development and improvement, as appropriate, including working with appropriate community agencies, campus PTSA, student leadership organizations such as PALS, S2S, Student Government, JROTC, etc., ADEPT (Alcohol, Drug Education, Prevention and Training), and other campus resources and programs.

9. Consults with teachers and campus administrators regarding the need for support following student discipline (North East Alternative Center placement, In-School or Out-of-school suspension).

10. Continues in a counseling capacity as the point of contact for students at alternative learning centers and the home campus.

11. Advocates for the individual student and the best options for meeting the individual student's needs.

12. Collaborates with campus counselors to evaluate the Comprehensive School Counseling Program and make changes as needed to serve student and campus needs.

13. Pursues relevant professional development as related to counseling students and improving opportunities for student development.

14. Attends monthly Wellness & Well-Being Team meetings.

15. Uses high-level interpersonal skills with students and those working with students to build trust and relationships.

16. Maintains confidentiality of information and shares limits of confidentiality and disclosure requirements with students, families and staff prior to providing counseling services.

17. Actively participates in district crisis team through training and campus crisis support when deployed by the Assistant Director of Guidance.

18. Regularly drives personal vehicle in the performance of assigned tasks, especially in required services at North East Alternative Center.

19. Reports to work on time every day.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Experience leading psychoeducational small groups
• Experience in mediation and in teaching mediation skills to others
• Training in Substance Use Prevention Interventions
• Training in Suicide Prevention and Intervention
• Experience in Crisis Response Interventions and Support
• Experience using and knowledge of Brief Counseling Theories
• Awareness of and adherence to the American School Counseling Association's Ethical Standards for School Counselors
• Demonstrated multicultural, ethical and professional competencies in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to develop and provide presentations to students, faculty and community members
• Demonstrated ability to use good judgment and discretion in sensitive, confidential issues and projects
• Valid Texas Driver's License with driving record that meets the requirements of the District
