General Information & Responsibilities
Peer Mentors serve to support and encourage fellow BHC students experiencing personal difficulties. They are knowledgeable guides and can help students recognize early on when they may need to access counseling services. Peer Mentors work to minimize the stigma associated with mental health matters, educate on good mental health practices, and build awareness of various mental health issues. This position is responsible for assisting the BHC Counseling Department.
Positions available at East Campus and Quad Cities Campus locations.
Description of Duties
Peer Counselors are responsible for:
Serve as an energetic and enthusiastic positive role model
Develop and maintain relationships with and provide assistance and support for students (focus on a smooth transition, acclimation, and a sense of belonging to BHC)
Help facilitate and encourage attendance to all Counseling Department wellness activities
Participate in training, programs and activities
Attend group and staff meetings
Be a knowledgeable resource for students who may be experiencing low-level distress
A thoughtful facilitator who provides access to people and resources
A role model and advocate for mental health
Serve as Gray Matters-BHC chapter board member
Organize campus events to increase awareness of mental health issues and suicide prevention.
Promote counseling and distribute mental health resources by tabling in high traffic areas and at other student events.
Advocate for changes in campus policies and procedures to better support mental health.
Ensure marketing is placed in appropriate places on campus and keep marketing up-to-date
Hold office hours for Counseling Department (Zen Zone) & Hawks Cupboard/The Kitchen (food pantry)
All other duties as assigned

Attend and participate in all training sessions and group meetings.
Participate in and complete all other tasks deemed necessary by the BHC Counseling Department Chair.
