Nature & Scope:
Positional Overview
We are currently seeking an experienced Drug & Alcohol Counselor to join our team. Under general supervision and as part of a collaborative team, the Counselor is responsible for administering standardized risk assessments and diagnostic testing instruments with assigned participants, referred to as a “caseload.” The Counselor monitors service delivery for residents from intake through discharge, conducting interviews, reviewing files, scoring assessments, and preparing reports to determine the appropriate level of care. This role is critical in supporting participants’ rehabilitation and successful re-entry into the community.
Role & Responsibility:
Tasks That Will Lead to Your Success
Administer, score, and interpret required screening and assessment tools, including but not limited to the Texas Christian University (TCU) Drug Screen, Treatment Assignment Protocol (TAP), and the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA).
Utilize additional assessment and substance abuse evaluation tools to support American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) placement determinations.
Conduct screenings and assessments during the intake process and follow-up assessments for current participants.
Perform post-testing for participants progressing through the program.
Interview participants to collect supplemental information not covered in formal assessments.
Review Division of Corrections (DOC) files for relevant case information.
Score and interpret assessment results and prepare detailed written reports.
Develop and maintain individualized treatment plans for each participant.
Facilitate both group and individual counseling sessions.
Maintain clinical charts in compliance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).
Complete discharge and aftercare plans.
Participate in case staffing with other team members to review progress and needs.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills & Experience
Qualifications That Will Help You Thrive
Associate degree in a Health and Human Services counseling field and Alcohol and Drug Trainee (ADT) designation; OR
Bachelor’s degree in health and human services, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or related field and Certified Associate Counselor – Alcohol & Drug (CAC-AD) certification.
Certified as an alcohol and drug counselor by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Ability to work on a flexible schedule, including evenings as needed.
Strong interpersonal skills for professional interaction in both individual and group settings.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to respond effectively and appropriately in emergencies.
Proficiency with computers and software is commonly used in counseling and case management.
Knowledge of the American Psychological Association’s Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing.
