Job Summary
The Substance Abuse Counselor provides structured, evidence-based group and supportive counseling services to individuals participating in an outpatient Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). This role focuses on substance use disorder treatment, relapse prevention, life skills development, and client engagement. The counselor works as part of a multidisciplinary team to support recovery and promote long-term stability.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate structured group counseling sessions for substance use disorder treatment.
- Provide supportive counseling and reinforce treatment plan goals
- Lead or assist with relapse prevention groups and life skills development sessions
- Document all services in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
- Support client engagement, motivation, and retention in treatment.
- Collaborate with clinical team members to ensure coordinated care.
- Participate in treatment team meetings and case reviews.
- Assist with community-based outreach as needed.

Requirements
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, or a related behavioral health field
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working in substance use disorder treatment or related behavioral health setting
- Experience working with rural or underserved populations preferred
- Knowledge of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) principles
- Familiarity with evidence-based practices, including:
- Motivational Interviewing
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Relapse Prevention
- Trauma-Informed Care
