Job Description

The Substation Construction Manager oversees all aspects of substation construction projects, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and schedule. This role coordinates field activities, manages contractors and stakeholders, and ensures that all work complies with applicable standards, drawings, and procedures. The position is site-based at substation locations and plays a critical role in delivering complex renewable-focused power projects from construction through commissioning and energization.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize and enforce safety protocols on the job site, ensuring full compliance with regulations, industry standards, and company procedures.
• Coordinate daily with engineers, contractors, EPC partners, and other stakeholders to ensure construction activities are executed effectively and aligned with project plans.
• Perform field inspections and audits of construction activities to verify adherence to design specifications, standards, and quality requirements.
• Maintain and manage QA/QC documentation, including inspection reports, test records, and other quality assurance materials.
• Keep detailed and accurate records of construction activities, including progress reports, safety inspections, and daily logs.
• Lead and manage construction teams in the field, monitoring tasks, providing feedback, and resolving conflicts to maintain productivity and morale.
• Interpret and work from electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, civil plans, and steel structural drawings to guide construction work.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate safety hazards and construction risks, taking proactive action to prevent incidents and delays.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during construction, ensuring the project remains on schedule and within scope.
• Oversee and support concrete work, including flat foundations, drill piers, breaker pads, and GSU containment pits, to ensure proper installation and quality.
• Collaborate with EPC teams to resolve requests for information (RFIs) and manage change orders in a timely and accurate manner.
• Perform material procurement and material takeoffs, ensuring that required materials are available and properly accounted for throughout the project.
• Document and report project outcomes, including successes, lessons learned, and opportunities for improvement after project completion.
• Work safely in proximity to equipment energized at hazardous voltage levels, following all safety practices and procedures.
• Lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials across uneven ground and in potentially hazardous environments as required by field conditions.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
• Promote open communication with direct reports and field personnel to enhance teamwork, surface issues early, and drive continuous improvement.
• Use computer systems and software, including MS Office (Excel, Word, Project) and any specialized substation construction software, to manage documentation, schedules, and reporting.
• Support turnover of constructed facilities and assist Commissioning teams through energization, ensuring a smooth transition from construction to operations.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in leading and managing construction projects, preferably in substation or related electrical infrastructure environments.
• Strong commitment to safety with the ability to prioritize and enforce safety protocols in the field and ensure compliance with regulations and industry standards.
• Broad understanding of organizational policies, procedures, and construction governance requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate effectively with engineers, contractors, EPC partners, and other stakeholders on complex projects.
• Hands-on experience performing inspections, maintaining QA/QC documentation, and auditing construction quality.
• Ability to maintain comprehensive records of construction activities, including progress reports and safety inspections.
• Extensive knowledge of electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, civil plans, and steel structural drawings used in substation construction.
• Thorough understanding of safety regulations and best practices, including hazard identification and mitigation in high-voltage environments.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve construction issues quickly to keep projects on track.
• Familiarity with concrete work such as flat foundations, drill piers, breaker pads, and GSU containment pits.
• Experience working with EPC organizations to process and resolve RFIs and change orders.
• Capability to perform material procurement and material takeoffs accurately and efficiently.
• Ability to work safely near equipment energized at hazardous voltage levels, adhering to all safety procedures.
• Physical ability to lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials in hazardous environments and across uneven terrain.
• Ability to maintain a clean and organized work area in a field construction setting.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to promote open dialogue and teamwork among direct reports and project stakeholders.
• Proficient computer skills, including strong working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project) and familiarity with specialized substation construction software.
• Experience supporting turnover and commissioning activities through energization of substation facilities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in substation construction management, foreman-level leadership, or similar field-based construction roles.
• Experience working on large-scale renewable substation power or utility infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated ability to document lessons learned and identify opportunities for continuous improvement across projects.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, multi-site project environment with changing priorities and schedules.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in documentation, reporting, and material management.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role located primarily at substation construction sites rather than in an office. The Substation Construction Manager works on active project sites supporting substation construction management across multiple locations in the country, with the first assignment based in Nevada and subsequent sites determined after project completion. The work environment includes outdoor and industrial conditions, exposure to hazardous voltage levels, and operation around heavy equipment and construction activities. The role requires frequent movement over uneven ground, lifting and carrying tools and materials, and maintaining a clean and organized work area. The position uses standard office software such as MS Office (Excel, Word, Project) and may use specialized substation construction tools and applications for scheduling, documentation, and coordination. Travel to various project sites is expected, and work hours may align with construction schedules to support field activities and commissioning through energization.

This is a Contract position based out of Las Vegas, NV.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
