Job Title: Substation Construction Manager
Job Description
The Substation Construction Manager leads all on-site construction activities for high-voltage substation projects, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and schedule. This role coordinates closely with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure projects meet technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and performance expectations. The Substation Construction Manager maintains rigorous QA/QC standards, oversees documentation and reporting, and supports commissioning and energization activities for utility-scale renewable power projects.
Responsibilities
- Prioritize and enforce safety protocols on the job site, ensuring full compliance with applicable regulations, industry standards, and internal procedures.
- Coordinate daily with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure substation construction activities progress effectively and efficiently.
- Perform field inspections and audits of construction work to verify adherence to design specifications, standards, and quality requirements.
- Maintain and manage QA/QC documentation, including inspection reports, test records, and corrective action logs.
- Keep detailed and accurate records of construction activities, including progress reports, safety inspections, and site logs.
- Lead and manage construction teams, including assigning tasks, monitoring performance, providing feedback, and resolving conflicts.
- Interpret and work from electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, civil plans, and steel structural drawings to guide field construction activities.
- Identify potential safety risks and construction hazards, and implement measures to mitigate them promptly.
- Recognize and resolve issues that arise during construction to keep the project on schedule and within scope.
- Oversee and support concrete work, including flat foundations, drill piers, breaker pads, and GSU containment pits.
- Collaborate with EPC partners to resolve requests for information (RFIs) and manage change orders as needed.
- Perform material procurement and material takeoffs, ensuring that required materials are available on time and in correct quantities.
- Document project outcomes, including successes, lessons learned, and opportunities for improvement after project completion.
- Work safely near equipment energized at hazardous voltage levels, following all safety procedures and clearance requirements.
- Lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials in challenging environments and across uneven ground as required for site work.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
- Promote open communication with direct reports and other team members to enhance teamwork, surface issues early, and foster a collaborative environment.
- Use computer tools and software, including MS Office applications, to prepare reports, track progress, and manage project documentation.
- Support turnover to commissioning teams and provide on-site assistance through energization of substation facilities.
- Represent the owner's interests at the substation site, ensuring that construction execution aligns with project objectives and quality expectations.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience leading and managing construction activities, preferably in substation or utility-scale infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and enforce safety protocols on active construction sites.
- Broad understanding of company policies, procedures, and standard construction practices.
- Strong experience coordinating with engineers, contractors, and multiple project stakeholders.
- Hands-on experience performing inspections and audits to maintain QA/QC standards in construction.
- Ability to maintain detailed records of construction activities, progress, and safety inspections.
- Extensive knowledge of electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, civil plans, and steel structural drawings.
- Thorough understanding of safety regulations and practices, including hazard identification and mitigation.
- Proven ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve construction issues to keep projects on track.
- Familiarity with concrete work, including flat foundations, drill piers, breaker pads, and GSU containment pits.
- Experience working with EPC partners to resolve RFIs and manage change orders.
- Ability to perform material procurement and material takeoffs for construction projects.
- Capability to work safely near equipment energized at hazardous voltage levels.
- Physical ability to lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials in hazardous environments and across uneven terrain.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Effective communication skills to promote open dialogue with team members and stakeholders.
- Proficient computer skills, including MS Excel, Word, and Project, and the ability to learn specialized software for substation construction.
- Experience supporting turnover to commissioning and assisting through energization of substation facilities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in construction management, electrical construction, or utility infrastructure projects.
- Experience in a foreman, superintendent, or similar leadership role on construction sites.
- Exposure to large-scale renewable power or utility projects.
- Familiarity with owner's engineer or owner's representative roles in construction environments.
- Ability to document lessons learned and recommend process improvements for future projects.
- Comfort working on geographically dispersed projects with changing site locations.
- Strong problem-solving mindset and the ability to make sound decisions in the field.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based at active substation construction sites rather than in an office. The Substation Construction Manager works at site locations across the country, with the initial assignment based in Nevada and subsequent sites determined after project completion. The environment involves outdoor work in varying weather conditions, exposure to hazardous voltage levels, and movement across uneven ground. The position requires frequent interaction with construction crews, engineers, EPC partners, and owner representatives on-site. The work setting emphasizes strict adherence to safety practices, organized work areas, and consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Travel to different project locations is expected as new substation projects are initiated.
