Protection & Control Engineer

Help power a reliable and safe electric grid. Join a team responsible for designing and supporting substation, transmission, and generation protection and control systems that keep critical infrastructure operating safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design protection and control systems for substations, transmission lines, and generation equipment.
  • Specify substation equipment, including breakers, transformers, relay panels, switches, capacitor banks, and reactors.
  • Develop protective relay, metering, and SCADA designs using industry standards, regulations, and system requirements.
  • Analyze system data and ratings to support compliance reporting (SPP, NERC, FERC) and system upgrades.
  • Prepare project scopes, cost estimates, and bills of material for capital projects and budget planning.
  • Support operations and construction teams with troubleshooting, testing, failure analysis, and technical problem resolution.
  • Review technical drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with company standards and codes.
  • Provide guidance to designers and technicians by reviewing work and monitoring project progress.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor"s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Utility experience with substation, generation, or transmission protection and control systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of power system protection, relays, wiring diagrams, schematics, and logic diagrams.
  • Ability to develop relay settings, logic, and elementary drawings.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and databases preferred.

This is a Contract position based out of Topeka, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $80.00/hr.
