    Description

    Position:         Substation Physical Designer 

    Location:        Birmingham, AL
    Travel:            Approximately 25%, including occasional overnight travel

    Duration:        3 Years

    Client:            Southern Company Services.

     

    Position Summary

     

    We are seeking a Substation Physical Designer to create 2D drawings and 3D models for Transmission and Distribution electrical substation projects. This role supports engineering standards, material specifications, construction activities, project schedules, safety, quality, and cost objectives.

     

    Key Responsibilities

    ·       Create and modify 2D drawings and 3D models for electrical substations.

    ·       Develop foundation, grounding, conduit, switchgear, switch house, electrical bus, and general arrangement layouts.

    ·       Produce drawings using AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Map 3D/P4A, or similar software.

    ·       Develop physical substation designs from single-line and three-line diagrams.

    ·       Prepare material specifications and order stock, non-stock, and shop-fabricated materials.

    ·       Assemble and transmit design drawing packages and supporting documentation.

    ·       Coordinate with engineers, project managers, construction teams, field services, maintenance personnel, vendors, and manufacturers.

    ·       Support pre-construction, construction, and post-construction activities.

    ·       Conduct project site visits and provide field design support.

    ·       Manage multiple projects, schedules, documentation, time reporting, and expenses.

     

    Required Qualifications

     

    Candidates must meet one of the following:

    ·       Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology;

    ·       Associate degree with at least five years of related experience; or

    ·       High school diploma with at least eight years of significant related industry experience.

     

    Additional requirements:

    ·       Ability to create and modify 2D drawings and 3D models.

    ·       Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

    ·       Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and time-management skills.

    ·       Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

    ·       Ability to visualize equipment and materials within three-dimensional space.

    ·       Willingness to travel approximately 25%.

    ·       Reliable internet access for remote or virtual work.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    ·       Electrical substation physical design experience.

    ·       Knowledge of Transmission or Distribution substation equipment and utility operations.

    ·       AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SDS Inventor, Autodesk Map 3D, or P4A experience.

    ·       Knowledge of basic electrical power systems.

    ·       Familiarity with NESC, NEC, and OSHA requirements.

    ·       Experience with document management, estimating, Primavera P6, or progress-reporting systems.

    ·       Experience supporting electric utilities, engineering firms, or utility contractors.
