POSITION 27S2 TITLE: Substitute Bus Operators (2026-2027)

LOCATIONS: Countywide

EMPLOYMENT TERM: As needed. Typically three or six hours per day, but flexible as needed by route or student needs and school starting time. 2026-2027 school year.

BID PERIOD: July 8, 2026, to May 14, 2027

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The school bus operator shall maintain positive work habits, perform duties efficiently and productively and maintain and/or upgrade skills. Further, it shall be the duty of the school bus operator to:

  1. Obey all traffic laws while operating the bus in a safe and efficient manner under all driving conditions

  2. Observe all Federal, State and Local safety regulations for school buses

  3. Maintain discipline, within county practices and guidelines, when students are on bus

  4. Assist special education students as needed

  5. Report to proper authorities any student involved in misconduct

  6. Clean and sanitize the bus regularly, both inside and out

  7. Run on time, the bus schedule as assigned to him/her

  8. Perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections before/after each run as prescribed by State and Local regulations

  9. Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness

  10. Transport only students authorized to ride the school bus and discharge students only at stops authorized by the Transportation Supervisor

  11. Exercise responsible leadership when on extra-curricular school trips

  12. Transport only students authorized to ride the school bus

  13. Report all accidents and complete all required State and Local accident reports

  14. Attend, and actively participate in, all in-service training classes provided by State and County school officials

  15. Attend all staff meetings called by the Transportation Supervisor, and faithfully complete all records, route schedules, and other required paperwork

  16. Safely operate emergency equipment including fire extinguishers and emergency exits

  17. Perform minor clerical or reporting tasks beyond required transportation documentation

  18. Other duties and assignments as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, as deemed necessary and appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS: Each operator shall familiarize himself/herself with and abide by the contents of the handbook, West Virginia School Transportation Regulations.

A school bus operator must hold a valid WV Commercial Driver's License with passenger and school bus endorsements along with a current WVDE School Bus Operator Certification. The operator must meet all training, health, and age requirements of the State and Local Boards of Education. All bus operators must pass a physical examination as prescribed by the State of WV and administered by a licensed, CDL certified physician, drug and alcohol testing, and State and Federal background checks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations will be provided in accordance with applicable law through an interactive process.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly sits for extended periods while operating a school bus and frequently uses hands and feet for steering, braking, and operating vehicle controls. The position requires frequent reaching, bending, and head and neck movement to visually monitor mirrors, road conditions, traffic, and student behavior.

The employee must be able to safely enter and exit the bus, navigate steps and aisles, and access engine compartment or exterior areas as required. The position also requires the ability to assist students, including students with disabilities or mobility needs, in accordance with training, established procedures, and applicable safety protocols.

The employee must be able to respond appropriately to emergency situations, including safely stopping the vehicle, communicating with students and emergency personnel, and assisting with evacuations or other actions consistent with training and district policy. These requirements are job-related and consistent with business necessity due to the safety-sensitive nature of student transportation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position. Work is performed primarily in a school bus and involves exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, precipitation, and changing road conditions.

The employee operates a vehicle in moderate to heavy traffic and is exposed to moderate to occasionally loud noise levels generated by the vehicle, student activity, and radio communication. The position requires frequent interaction with students, including those with behavioral, medical, or special transportation needs, and may involve potential exposure to bodily fluids or illness-related incidents.

Work schedules typically include morning and afternoon routes and may involve split shifts with breaks between assigned routes, depending on district needs.

SALARY: Salary to be determined by salary classification level, experience, and education according to schedule at https://boe.mars.k12.wv.us/o/mcs/page/salary-schedules. Pay Grade D.
