Position Summary: The Substitute Health Assistant provides temporary support in addressing the health needs of students and provides appropriate care for ill and/or injured students under the supervision of the school nurse.
Qualifications: The qualified applicant must have a minimum of a high school diploma or grade level equivalent diploma (GED) and must have successfully passed one of the following programs:
- Current Iowa RN or LPN or MA (Medical Assistant) or CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant)
- Current/Up to Date CPR/BLS certification and Mandatory Reporter Training
- Experience working in a school setting, pediatrics or public health preferred.
Job Description:
- Upholds school district health policies related to student health, safety, and confidentiality
- Provide basic first aid and emergency care to ill and injured students as directed by the school nurse
- Perform and documents accurate vital signs
- Initiate, maintain, and update student medical and health records and databases on an on- going basis as directed by the school nurse
- Maintain accurate health logs for all student visits to the nurse's office
- Aid in updating and maintaining student immunization records
- Communicate with students, school nurse, staff, and parent/guardian as directed by the school nurse
- Administer medications to students in compliance with district policy and physician's orders as directed by the school nurse
- Maintain nurse office and supplies
- Support students' physical and emotional well-being during the school day
- Act as an emergency responder in the building
- Willingness to learn special procedures (i.e., gastric-tube management, inhalation therapy, emergency protocols, etc.)
- Participate in specialized training for individual student's health care needs (i.e., catheterization, insulin injections, feeding tube care, etc.)
- Perform other tasks that may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the supervisor. The health assistant shall work under the general direction of the building administration and nurse
- Complete required district training
- Reports to school nurse and building administration
- Other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements: Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking.
Travel between school buildings may be required. Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Pay: $15.00 per hour as a sub health assistant
