Substitute Health Service Nurse

DOUGLAS COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT HEALTH SERVICE NURSE - R.N. (Registered Nurse) FUNCTION Performs moderately difficult work in providing a health services program; serves as member of the health services staff at the school and assists in district-wide health program projects in accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes; conducts screenings of vision, hearing, dental, scoliosis, and physical appraisals in accordance with State law and District policies and procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work is performed independently requiring some measure of initiative under the administrative direction of the Chief Health Nurse. The Chief Health Nurse, in cooperation with the Site Administrator, will at least annually evaluate the Health Service Nurse-RN's performance. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Provides lead supervision to district-wide health services staff and other district personnel by providing technical and consultative services regarding health care plans and standard nursing practices and procedures in accordance with state laws and regulations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Serve as resource for site and district health services staff; provides technical and consultative services to site and district health services staff and other district personnel as needed. Maintain familiarity and keep site administration informed of health guidelines and regulations. Maintain appropriate school and health records; assist students with daily medications. Identify pupils with health needs that interfere with learning. Develop, implement, supervise and evaluate district-wide and site health care plans in accordance with district rules and regulations and state laws governing nursing practices. Disseminate information to students and staff in recognizing and reporting health deviations. Provide information to pupils, parents, and school personnel to plan action for minimizing the health problems of pupils. Participate in regular meetings with district-wide health services personnel as requested. Serve as a resource person to site staff for health related issues, including screening for special education placement. Adapt and apply information from related fields; keep current on health guidelines and regulations. Arrange for the instruction of school personnel in administering emergency care and bloodborne pathogen training. Administer first aid in accordance with District policies. Exercise judgment regarding the disposition of pupils who become ill or who are injured at school. Serve as liaison between community agencies and the school. 1 HEALTH SERVICE NURSE - R.N. (Registered Nurse) Page Two NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Perform other related duties as assigned. WORK CONTACTS Contact with students, staff and parents. Some contact with the general public. Daily contact with possible infectious conditions. CONDITIONS OF WORK Light physical activity in a normal office environment. Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to a maximum of 50 pounds. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Knowledge of health guidelines and regulations; knowledge of methods and techniques of public health service; knowledge of first aid and emergency procedures and methods necessary to assist in contributing to the total health program of the school; knowledge of state laws and district policies and procedures governing a health services program. The ability to perform the following work activities with or without reasonable accommodations: Service and maintain the confidence and cooperation of students. Communicate effectively with students, parents and staff. Respond quickly to emergency situations. Administer first aid in accordance with district policies. Conduct instruction for staff and students. Maintain accurate records and reports. Follow oral and written instructions. Work harmoniously with those contacted in the course of work. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING One to two years experience in public health nursing, preferably in a school district; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) and C.P.R. Card. Must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing plus Nevada State School Endorsement upon hire. ( Current incumbents must be able to obtain Bachelor's degree in Nursing plus Nevada State School Endorsement within three (3) years from 7/1/04.)
