Summary Statement
Join a customer-focused library team where you'll help create a welcoming experience for users of all ages. As a Substitute Library Assistant I, you'll provide circulation, reference and technology support, assist with user questions, and help maintain inviting library spaces. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys helping others, adapts easily to different locations and brings patience and professionalism to every interaction. Hours vary, working up to 19-hours per week, with weekends typically scheduled between 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Essential Functions
Assists library users with circulation, reference, readers advisory and other library services. Maintains accurate user account information and resolves customer concerns tactfully, using discretion and initiative to meet user needs. Maintains a basic knowledge of library resources and practices. Assists the public with library computer use and related technology. Assists with user inquiries and explains policies and procedures. Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
Performs routine or repetitive tasks with specific instructions and set procedures, such as performing proper library opening and closing procedures and checking in returned materials using library computer systems. Maintains library collections by accurately sorting and shelving materials.
Creates displays to promote programs, library services and materials.
Assists with offsite events for users of all ages, as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts managements right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is frequently moderate and occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell, and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb, and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases, or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to bodily fluids.
This position works: some weekends and evenings and schedules vary.
19-Hour Temporary
All temporary part-time employees working less than an average of 19-hours per week are not currently eligible for benefits.
4-Month Temporary
All 4-month temporary employees working an average of 40-hours per week will accrue personal leave which can be used during employment.
8-Month Seasonal
In addition to accruing personal leave, anyone in an 8-month seasonal position working over an average of 30-hours per week is eligible for medical coverage.
9-Month Temporary
In addition to personal leave accrual and medical coverage, a position that is classified as a 9-month temporary is eligible for PERSI retirement benefits with required standard employee and City contribution rates
