The School Nurse has the responsibility to provide expertise and oversight of school health services and to promote health education. The School Nurse must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by the School Nurse require discretionary judgment and analysis. The School Nurse is responsible for the coordination and performance of the following:

Key Responsibilities

  • Possess and maintain current RN/LPN License
  • Possess and maintain current CPR/AED/First Aid certification or obtain in a timely manner
  • Obtain Stop the Bleed Certification in a timely manner
  • Obtain and maintain CDC concussion certification in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, with positive work ethic and work record
  • Treat students and staff for health and safety needs occurring during the school day and carefully document treatments and procedures
  • Consult with teachers, school administrators, and other school staff regarding student healthcare
  • Follow HIPPA and FERRPA laws
  • Administer medications to students as prescribed by doctors
  • Educate students and staff on health and wellness procedures
  • Help students who have disabilities requiring nursing assistance and routine daily assistance
  • Maintain up-to-date medical knowledge of the many areas of health including mental health

needed in the day-to-day management of school-aged students

  • Follow Indiana school laws and policies of Pioneer Regional School Corporation pertaining to

student/staff health and wellness

  • Quickly assess emergency situations and act according to established school emergency

Procedures

  • Maintain any additional certifications or training requirements as may be required by the State of Indiana for school nurse personnel
  • Communicate regularly with school administration information regarding any health-related

concerns, crisis situations, or issues which may impact school-wide

  • Assist parents in decision making when it pertains to the health and wellbeing of their school-age children
  • Keep the school health station organized and clean
  • Provide needed information and supplies to teachers taking students off school grounds for field

trips or student events

  • Other duties as assigned by the school administration and registered nurse
