CLASSIFICATION: Professional Substitute

REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator

COMPENSATION: $25.00 per hour

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: On an as-needed basis beginning with the 2026-2027 Learning Beyond the Bell / 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Program, including the summer component of the grant program.

School-Year Schedule: Monday through Thursday, up to three (3) hours per day after school.

Summer Schedule: Dates and hours will be determined based on student enrollment, funding availability, and program needs.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Program is designed to support and extend learning opportunities for K-12 students beyond the regular instructional day and school year. The program provides academic enrichment opportunities to help students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, offers enrichment activities that complement the regular instructional program, and supports parents and families through literacy and other educational services.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Substitute Teacher provides supervision, instructional support, and enrichment opportunities to participating students during the absence of a regularly assigned program teacher. The substitute teacher implements lesson plans and activities provided by the program, maintains a safe and positive learning environment, and supports the goals and objectives of the Learning Beyond the Bell Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in Education or a related field, preferred.
  • Valid West Virginia Teaching Certificate, Substitute Permit, Long-Term Substitute Permit, or other credential appropriate for the assignment.
  • Meet applicable requirements established by West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5202.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10 and applicable state requirements.
  • Experience working with school-age students preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction and Student Support

  • Implement lesson plans, activities, and instructional experiences provided by the regular program teacher or Site Coordinator.
  • Provide academic support and enrichment activities aligned with program goals.
  • Encourage student participation and engagement in program activities.
  • Maintain a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment.
  • Adapt to the needs of diverse learners and varying instructional settings.
  • Communicate pertinent information regarding student participation and behavior to the Program Coordinator or Site Coordinator.

Program Operations

  • Meet students at designated times and locations.
  • Supervise students during instructional activities, transitions, snack periods, and enrichment activities.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and required program documentation.
  • Assist with snack distribution and other program activities as assigned.
  • Follow all school, district, and program procedures and expectations.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times.

Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Site Coordinators, program staff, and school personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, punctuality, and sound judgment.
  • Attend required trainings and meetings when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator, Site Coordinator, or designee.
