Building Substitute Teacher - Middle/High School

Reports To: Building Principal or Designee

Position Summary

Under the supervision of school administration, the Building Substitute Teacher provides classroom coverage and instructional support when regular teachers are absent. The position reports to the assigned school on a regular schedule and may work across subjects, grade levels, and school settings based on daily needs. The Building Substitute supports continuity of instruction and helps maintain a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Report to the assigned school each scheduled workday and remain available for assignments throughout the workday.
  • Follow lesson plans and provide appropriate instructional support.
  • Provide classroom coverage across subjects and grade levels as assigned.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, study halls, and other school settings.
  • Maintain appropriate classroom management and student behavior in accordance with district policies.
  • Take attendance and maintain required records.
  • Provide instructional assistance and support to students.
  • Communicate relevant information to the absent teacher or school administration as requested.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including study hall, in-school suspension, lunchroom, arrival/dismissal, or special event coverage.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
  • Follow Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, school procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule

School-year position aligned with the district-approved school calendar. The position is scheduled for a 6.5-hour workday. The specific schedule and assignment will be established by the District based on operational and student needs.

The position may be assigned on a full-time or part-time basis. Specific FTE status, schedule, compensation, and benefit eligibility will be established through the employees individual employment agreement or other applicable documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Valid Connecticut substitute teaching authorization, teaching certification, or other authorization as required by the State of Connecticut or District.
  • Prior experience working with middle and/or high school students preferred.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.
  • Flexibility, reliability, and ability to work collaboratively with school staff.
  • Ability to adapt to different classroom environments, subjects, grade levels, and student needs.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and exercise sound judgment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; move throughout the school environment; supervise students and respond to student needs or safety concerns; lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds; and communicate effectively. Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, offices, gymnasiums, outdoor areas, and other school facilities. The position requires regular interaction with students, teachers, administrators, and support staff.

Salary: $125.00 per day

Workday: 6.5 hours
