Job Summary/Objective:

Key responsibilities for the SUD counselor are those identified in the Medicaid Manual as alcohol and/or drug services, including individual and group counseling as well as evaluation, crisis intervention, care coordination through the person-centered planning process. Services shall be provided in a responsive, coordinated, effective and efficient manner focusing on process and outcomes.  Supports are provided as outlined in the individualized plan of service based on person-centered planning.  SUD counselor staff Operate under the guidance and clinical supervision of a master’s level behavioral health clinician/certified clinical supervisor (MCBAP).

Essential Duties and Functions:

  • Provides individual and group counseling, and discharge planning as appropriately required.
  • Provides risk assessment and connection to care.
  • Prepares customer treatment plans and reviews goals & objectives identified in the treatment plan within designated time frames and in accordance with customer needs.
  • Treats all customers professionally, generally able to individualize counseling strategies to meet the unique characteristics of the customer.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with all referral sources and community resources.
  • Aware of and follows federal and state laws and agency guidelines regarding the confidentiality of client records.
  • Maintains record compliance within agency requirements and standards utilizing electronic/hard copy record formats.
  • Provide services using resiliency, recovery focused, and evidence-based treatment. Services are provided in a trauma-informed process.
  • Documentation completed is timely, strengths based, utilizing recovery methods and measuring customer progress and satisfaction with services.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled clinical supervision.
  • Ensures compliance and participation with competency improvement activities including, but not limited to, credentialing, continuing education, implementation of evidence-based practices, peer review attendance, and professional improvement practices.
  • SUD Counselors must receive training in the core elements of Addiction Counseling.
  • Participates in corporate quality improvement and problem-solving activities. 
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy within MDHHS, state and federal guidelines. 
  • Utilizes knowledge of CARF, CMS, MDHHS and Managed Care standards.
  • Position requires annual TB testing.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field is required.
  • CADC or DP –C (MCBAP) or ability to obtain with agency support within 30 days of hire.
  • One year of specialized training or experience in working with substance use disorders or the ability to do so.
  • One year of computer experience – Word, Excel, and other electronic medical record software preferred.
