Summer Academy - 2026 Job Posting

Orientation Day: July 6, 2026; 8 AM - 4 PM (7.5 hours; must attend) Student Days: July 7 through August 6, 2026, Tuesday through Thursday Vacation will not be approved during the scheduled summer program dates. Any time lost due to staff absences may result in termination from the summer program and/or reduction in pay. Teachers and paras will be paid according to a stipend. The stipend will be split into two pays (July 24, 2026 and August 21, 2026)

Program Descriptions and Positions Available in the Program

Appoquinimink Summer Academy - Special Education (Grades PreK-12) Students invited to this program have been identified by their IEP team as being eligible to receive special education support as outlined in their IEP. Special education staff will support students attending both the Extended School Year and 12 Month Programs.

Positions Available: Special Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals

Grades PreK Location: Brick Mill Early Childhood Center ESY and 12 Month Teacher Hours: 8:45 am - 12:15 pm Teacher Stipend: $3300 Para Stipend: $1800

Grades K-1 Location: Spring Meadow Early Childhood Center ESY and 12 Month Teacher Hours: 8:45 am - 12:45 pm Teacher Stipend: $3700 Para Stipend: $2000

Grades 2-5 Location: Old State Elementary ESY and 12 Month Teacher Hours: 8:45 am - 12:45 pm Teacher Stipend: $3700 Para Stipend: $2000

Grades 6-8 Location: Cantwells Bridge Middle School ESY and 12 Month Teacher Hours: 7:30 am - 11:30 am Teacher Stipend: $3700 Para Stipend: $2000

Grades 9-12, 18-22 Location: Appoquinimink High School ESY and 12 Month Teacher Hours: 7:30 am - 11:30 am Teacher Stipend: $3700 Para Stipend: $2000

Specialized Programs Summer Academy Students identified in this program may have moderate to significant cognitive impairments or communication/social/behavioral needs, supports, and services as identified in their IEP. This is inclusive of students attending the RISE, Foundations, THRIVE, LCCE, and LIFE Programs. Training and support will be provided.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - SPED TEACHERS The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all the responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Provides a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
  • Maintains professionalism, confidentiality, and an atmosphere that promotes student learning.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive, collaborative rapport and communication with students, school personnel, and parents.
  • Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities by communicating expectations of appropriate behavior.
  • Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
  • Plans and uses classroom time effectively.
  • Implements School Board and school-based policies and procedures to uphold school regulations.
  • Integrates technology in instruction.
  • Communicates curriculum and student related information effectively in oral and written form.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Summer School Leaders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPED TEACHERS Below are the qualifications for this position:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Hold or eligible for State of Delaware teacher certification in subject matter to be taught.
  • Strong skills in instructional and behavior management strategies appropriate for diverse learners.
  • Must be proficient with technology and follow best practices for online instruction.
  • Must have access to reliable internet from home site.
  • Past satisfactory evaluations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject content, curriculum, methodology of effective teaching.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skilled in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communications, excellent human relations skills.
  • Safety Care Training preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - PARAPROFESSIONALS The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all the responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Assists in providing a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the students needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Provides support for students with emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Plans accommodations and develops instruction to support individual education plans.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers, clinicians, and behavior interventionist to foster a positive learning environment.
  • Implements de-escalation strategies and manages classroom behavior using safety care training strategies.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, maintains confidentiality, accepts constructive feedback, and maintains an atmosphere that promotes student learning.
  • Supports the classroom teacher in instruction by engaging in planning, following plans outlined by the teacher, and working with individual students/small groups.
  • Supports the classroom teacher in assessment by monitoring independent work, collecting academic/behavioral data, and assisting in keeping accurate/current record of student progress.
  • Supports the classroom teacher in organization by performing clerical duties, assisting in gathering/developing instructional materials, and maintaining an organized work environment.
  • Demonstrates characteristics of an effective team member by engaging in problem solving, and exhibiting flexibility, and cooperation.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Works continuously toward self-improvement through the active pursuit of professional development activities.
  • Implements School Board and school-based policies and procedures in order to uphold school regulations.
  • Assumes other responsibilities and performs other duties as assigned by the Summer Lead.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - PARAPROFESSIONALS Below are the qualifications for this position:

  • High School diploma/GED.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, students, administrators, and parents.
  • Strong skills in behavior management strategies appropriate for diverse learners.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test. Anyone offered employment is required to provide the following: proper identification (Social Security Card and Drivers License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
