Job Summary:
This position facilitates learning, academic achievement and personal development by providing driving instruction to students who have successfully completed their classroom portion of the driver's education program. Driving hours will be scheduled by you based on your availability and students' availability with assistance from the behind the wheel summer monitor.
Special requirements
Must hold a valid driver's license with no serious violations and have prior approval before beginning.
Licensure, certification, and other requirements
Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with 9-12 Safety & Driver Education endorsement, registered in Lake County.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of the Behind the Wheel program, including its structure, student and staff requirements, and scheduling.
Familiarity with Google Sheets or Excel and other Microsoft products.
Strong communication skills for staff and student support.
Problem-solving skills to address student challenges and provide solutions.
Ability to adapt communication styles to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks within a limited time frame.
Ability to follow program guidelines and expectations to ensure consistency and effectiveness.
Maintain a calm, professional demeanor while managing high-stress or emergency situations.
Essential Functions:
Track student progress towards meeting the driving requirements.
Make contact with students struggling to meet the driving schedule.
Regularly communicate with students and program administrators to ensure smooth implementation of the program.
Modify support strategies based on individual student progress and challenges.
Provide direct, in-vehicle instruction aligned to state driver education standards and district curriculum.
Ensure student and public safety at all times by maintaining dual control of the vehicle and modeling defensive driving practices.
Assess student driving skills (e.g., steering, braking, lane changes, parking, hazard recognition) and provide immediate, constructive feedback.
Maintain accurate records of student driving hours, skill mastery, attendance, and performance documentation.
Inspect vehicles daily for safety and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
Teach and reinforce traffic laws, risk awareness, and responsible decision-making.
Maintain required state licensure, certifications, and compliance with district and state regulations.
