Waltham High School is hiring for a summer strength and conditioning coach.
The primary focus of this role is to design and implement sport-specific programs that cater to specialty groups (e.g., collision sports, rotational athletes, endurance runners, and injury-rehabilitation groups). The ideal candidate will possess a passion for youth athletic development, a strict commitment to teaching proper form and technique, and the ability to foster a safe, positive, and motivating environment. Responsibilities include: Develop and implement evidence-based, sport-specific strength, speed, agility, and conditioning programs for various high school athletic teams. Tailor training regimens to accommodate specialty groups, ensuring appropriate progressions and regressions based on training age, sport requirements, and individual student needs. Prioritize injury prevention by integrating mobility, core stability, and proper mechanics into daily warm-ups and workouts. Provide active, hands-on coaching during all training sessions, with an absolute focus on proper form, lifting technique, and safety. Maintain high energy and a positive environment to motivate student-athletes while teaching discipline and accountability. Supervise the weight room and outdoor training areas to ensure proper equipment usage and a clean, organized facility. Collaborate with head sport coaches and athletic trainers to align summer programming with team goals and injury-rehabilitation protocols. Conduct baseline and post-summer athletic assessments (e.g., testing strength, power, and speed metrics) to track student progress. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exercise Science & Biomechanics: Deep understanding of youth resistance training guidelines, kinetic chain movement, and biomechanics to effectively correct lifting form in real-time. Sport-Specific Programming: Ability to differentiate training demands between various sports (e.g., power/explosiveness for football vs. multi-directional agility for soccer vs. shoulder health for volleyball/baseball).
Group Management: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to confidently command and manage large groups of high school athletes simultaneously. Inclusivity & Mentorship: A strong understanding of how to motivate a diverse student population, from elite varsity athletes to beginners.
Qualifications & Certifications Minimum Requirements Experience coaching strength and conditioning at the high school, collegiate, or private sports-performance level. Pursuing or holding a degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, or a related field (preferred). Required Certifications (or highly recommended to be obtained prior to start date) First Aid and CPR/AED Certification: Must hold a current, valid certification through a recognized provider (e.g., American Red Cross or American Heart Association). Professional Strength & Conditioning Certification: Must hold (or be actively working toward) an accredited credential, such as: NSCA-CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) USA Weightlifting (USAW) Level 1 Coach NASM-PES (Performance Enhancement Specialist)

Hours: Part-time / Hourly (Mornings)
Compensation: Commensurate with WEA contract
