This recruitment will be used to fill four (4) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Summer Veterinary Experience Mentor positions for the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Summer Veterinary Experience Mentor team will work with CCVM program coordinators to develop and facilitate the week-long Summer Veterinary Experience.

The Summer Veterinary Experience will take place July 20 - July 24, 2026 with hours spent in advance on the planning process and with additional training before July. The OSU Summer Veterinary Experience is a hands-on and engaging experience for academically talented high school students interested in veterinary medicine.

Position Duties

Mentors will develop the schedule and activities for the Summer Veterinary Experience. Mentors will facilitate the sessions and activities during the program, with assistance from CCVM faculty/staff and outside entities if desired.

Mentors and instructors work with students to discover and explore their talents and understanding of the basic sciences, animal and human health, and social sciences.

Throughout the experience, staff provide a supportive atmosphere, with emphasis on teamwork and open discussion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

  • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

Applicants must be a current Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student at the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Prior experience working with high school students and an interest in teaching/mentoring youth.
