Job Description

The City of Chesapeake is excited to offer meaningful summer employment opportunities through our Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) from July 1, 2026, through September 4, 2026. This program is designed to provide Chesapeake residents ages 16 through 19 with valuable hands on work experience while learning about careers in local government and public service.

Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside City employees in a supportive and team oriented environment while building workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, customer service, professionalism, and time management.

Participants may assist with:

  • Shelving books and organizing library materials
  • Assisting with crafts and children's activities
  • Pulling book and resource lists for patrons and staff
  • Supporting library programs and special events
  • Helping with summer reading program sign ups and activities
  • Providing general customer service and assisting visitors as needed

Ideal candidates enjoy working with the public, are organized, willing to learn, and have an interest in helping others in a community focused environment.

Required Qualifications

Students participating in the Summer Youth Employment Program will be responsible for:

  • Providing their own transportation to and from work,
  • Arriving at the work site at the time designated by the work site supervisor.
  • Performing the tasks assigned by the supervisor in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrating honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, appropriate dress, and a willingness to learn.
  • Conforming to the guidelines of the work site.
