Description

This is a skilled, full-time exempt position under the direct supervision of the Public Works Director. This position will manage and oversee the daily operations of the Spring Hill Traffic Department. This position is responsible for promoting the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists throughout the City, supervise traffic signal staff, coordinating traffic signal maintenance activities, ensure compliance with local, state, and federal traffic regulations, and collaborate with City officials on traffic planning and public safety initiatives.

Examples of Duties

  • Supervise daily operations of traffic signals, signage, striping and traffic crews.
  • Plan, schedule, and oversee traffic signal contractors.
  • Repair and maintain traffic signals, signs and pavement markings.
  • Coordinate traffic control plans for jobs related to the repair and maintenance of traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings.
  • Inspect traffic signal work to ensure it is completed safely, fully, and in compliance with local, state and federal standards.
  • Assist with budgeting, cost estimates, purchasing and long-range planning.
  • Monitor equipment and material inventory and coordinate reordering when necessary.
  • Coordinate with engineers, contractors, utilities, and law enforcement on traffic related projects.
  • Ensure compliance with MUTCD, OSHA, and department safety procedures.
  • Maintain records, reports, and documentation related to traffic maintenance and operations.
  • Support after-hours response for traffic signal outages, storm damage, and emergency traffic issues.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in traffic signal operations.
  • 3 years supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Working knowledge of traffic control devices, signal systems, MUTCD standards.
  • Ability to read plans, specifications, and technical diagrams.
  • Valid driver's license required. IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I & II/Work Zone Traffic Control certification required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

ENVIROMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed both in the field and in a municipal operations environment. The employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, electrical hazards, moving traffic, construction zones, heights, and heavy equipment. This position may require rotating on-call duties and response during storms, power outages, and other emergencies.
