WORKING CONDITIONS:
The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds as associated with a dental clinic. May, at times, be required to travel between campuses for departmental meetings.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to work in a dental setting with potential exposure to bodily fluids and blood borne pathogens; Personal Protective Equipment and safety procedures must be utilized as required. Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of a Dental Hygienist. Maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of employees, students, and donors. There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations. Frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting and classrooms rooms, labs, and clinic. There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor. May need to assist in lifting/transferring patients into operatory chairs. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Possess the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well. Able to manipulate instruments, supplies, and equipment with speed, dexterity, and exceptional hand-eye coordination. Able to function in an environment with potential latex and/or nitrile material exposure and without an allergic reaction.
HOURS:
Open clinic hours vary per semester and run in 4-hour blocks. Generally, the clinic supervision will be Monday - Thursday from 8am - Noon and 1pm - 5pm; Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6pm - 9pm.

Job Function
Supervising dentists are responsible for supervising patient care provided by dental hygiene students and dental hygiene faculty. Related activities include clinical oversight and consultation, evaluation of oral abnormalities, radiographic interpretations, dental diagnosis, preventive prescriptions, and pain management. The supervising dentist is available for faculty, staff, student, and patient consultation and referrals. Supervising dentists will work closely with the associate dean and faculty to build a robust curriculum.
Job Responsibilities
The tasks and responsibilities of the supervising dentist:
- Provides diagnostic, consultative, and referral services.
- Evaluates patient medical history, dental history, periodontal charting, and restorative charting.
- Consults with primary care providers for medical clearance.
- Evaluates lesions, anomalies, or other pathologies for referral.
- Manages medical emergencies.
- Approves and evaluates dental radiographs.
- Follows AAP guidelines.
- Authorize purchasing and track usage of controlled substances utilized in the clinic for pain control and control of viral, bacterial, and fungal infections.
- Approves, administers and/or supervises the administration of controlled substances including local anesthesia and nitrous oxide by faculty and students.
- Authorizes and evaluates dental sealants.
- Provides consultation in the clinical setting.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies and protocols.
- Serves as a resource to questions that faculty / student(s) may have regarding patient care.
- Attends and participates in Dental Science in-service/calibration programs, program and department meetings, and advisory board meetings.
- Coordinates and cooperates with full-time clinical course coordinators.
- Understands and applies Macomb Community College, Federal, State, ADA CODA, OSHA, CDC, HIPAA, FERPA, and State Board of Dentistry guidelines, policies, rules, and / or regulations.
- Complies with and is present at ADA CODA Accreditation Site Visits.
Education
- Doctorate (DDS or DMD) from an accredited dental school.
- Currently licensed in the State of Michigan.
- Current Controlled Substance License.
- Currently certified in Health Care Provider BLS/CPR.
Qualifications
Two years of experience as a practicing dentist to include knowledge of all phases of clinical dentistry and dental hygiene, knowledge of dental hygiene clinic equipment, radiography equipment, dental materials, and lab equipment.
