General Job Information

JOB SUMMARY

This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility (CDF) and Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF) locations. This position serves as one of several first line supervisors assigned to each of three shifts within the CDF and CTF Facilities. The incumbent works under the general supervision of a Captain, who sets the overall objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises shift operations ensuring staff assignments are posted and carried out; conducts roll call training making staff aware of changes in operational security Inspects zone and other assignments for safety/health hazards, ensuring subordinates awareness of such hazards on the job. Counsels non-supervisory staff on a variety of correctional duties related to security, inmate conduct, safety, cleanliness, and maintenance in the correctional setting. Ensures and/or assists in ensuring appropriate security measures to ensure adequate operational efficiency is maximized, and prescribed policies are followed. Provides supervisory review of sanitation, cleanliness, and safety conditions in assigned areas; identifies health hazards; initiates corrective action, when necessary; ensures employee awareness of such hazards; and makes appropriate notification through the chain-of-command.

Participates in the preparation of assignment rosters, and development of post orders. Recommends adjustment of work schedules, additional correctional officers, or the reassignment of staff when such action is deemed advisable in the interest of security. Provides staff support to accomplish administrative tasks associated with shift responsibilities, including reports, records, and codification of assigned responsibilities. Supervises shift operations, as needed, and ensuring assignments are posted and carried out.Oversees and directs subordinate officers in controlling inmate movement, local and transit. Maintains extensive knowledge of activities, conditions, and Correctional Officers in assigned areas, reporting to supervisor/designee on all occurrences therein. Makes required rounds in areas within the facility, perimeter, and outpost inspections.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. To be creditable, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the line of progression.

An example of specialized experience is the ability to provide leadership and direction in a supervisory capacity and team base environment; and securing subordinate staff.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Incumbent must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR).

Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid drivers license during employment.

Must be able to use a firearm and obtain and maintain a license to carry the firearm.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIORNMENT

Work is performed in a Correctional Institution. Responds to calls required and as needed to return to duty.

Tour of Duty: Must be flexible to various work hours and assignment locations. 3 shifts 7am to 4pm, 4pm to 12 am & 12am to 7am.Pay Plan, Series and Grade: MS-0007-11

Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS) At-Will: At-will employment applies to the MSS. All positions and appointments in the MSS serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

A TB Test is required prior to entry on duty.

Essential Position Designation: This position is classified as an essential position under the provisions of the District Personnel Manual Chapter 12.

Residency Preference: Applicants claiming Residency Preference will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
