General Summary
This position supervises the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in heavy civil construction operations to ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and available to support project needs. The role leads maintenance personnel, coordinates preventive maintenance and repair activities, and ensures compliance with safety, environmental, regulatory, and manufacturer requirements.
Essential Job Accountabilities
Supervise mechanics, welders, field service technicians, oilers, and shop personnel to ensure maintenance work is completed safely, accurately, and in alignment with operational priorities.
Schedule and prioritize preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs to maximize fleet availability, minimize downtime, and support project execution.
Coordinate maintenance activities for earthmoving, paving, crushing, hauling, and support equipment to improve equipment reliability and maintain operational readiness.
Review equipment condition reports, repair needs, and maintenance trends to develop repair plans that align resources with business and project priorities.
Monitor equipment utilization, reliability, repair history, and downtime trends to identify recurring issues and support continuous improvement in fleet performance.
Ensure accurate and timely completion of work orders, repair records, parts usage, and maintenance documentation to support compliance, cost tracking, and future planning.
Oversee diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, and major component rebuilds for heavy equipment to restore performance, extend service life, and reduce repeat failures.
Provide technical guidance on hydraulic, engine, electrical, powertrain, emissions, air brake, and electronic control systems to support complex repairs and safe equipment operation.
Collaborate with operations, project teams, dispatch, OEM representatives, and vendors to coordinate repairs, warranty claims, and technical support that reduce delays and support project readiness.
Manage parts procurement, inventory needs, maintenance costs, and budget inputs to help maintain required resources and support financial accountability.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Technical training, associate degree, or certification in diesel technology, heavy equipment maintenance, fleet maintenance, or a related field preferred.
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.
Work Experience
Minimum 7 years of progressive heavy equipment maintenance, fleet maintenance, or related mechanical experience required, preferably in heavy civil construction, materials, or field operations environments.
Minimum 2 years of lead, supervisory, or coordination experience with maintenance personnel, shop operations, field service, or repair scheduling required.
Experience with preventive maintenance programs, equipment diagnostics, repair planning, vendor coordination, and maintenance documentation preferred.
Certified Equipment Manager from AEMP preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance, diagnostics, repair processes, and preventive maintenance practices for construction and fleet equipment.
Ability to supervise, coach, prioritize, and coordinate the work of maintenance personnel to support safe, timely, and reliable equipment repairs.
Ability to interpret repair manuals, schematics, fault codes, inspection reports, and equipment condition data to support accurate troubleshooting and repair decisions.
Working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, environmental, OEM, and safety requirements applicable to shop, field, and fleet maintenance operations.
Ability to communicate repair priorities, equipment status, technical information, and resource needs clearly with operations, project teams
