GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Supervises the custodial and maintenance operations of a school district; performs related duties as required.
COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require judgment supervising the custodial and maintenance operations of a school district. The duties are performed under the direction of the district designated chief facilities officer.
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Supervises the custodial and maintenance operations of a school district.
- Develops and maintains a continuous program of inspection of all school buildings, grounds and facilities to ensure the safe and efficient condition, maintenance and operation.
- Participates in interviewing, hiring, and assigning the work of custodial and maintenance personnel.
- Inspects and supervises the maintenance of heating and ventilation equipment.
- Inspects the work of private contractors, and custodial and maintenance personnel to determine that procedures are followed and standards are met.
- Coordinates efficient and economic use of personnel, equipment and time for each program.
- Assists in drafting specifications and plans for repairs and alterations to buildings and equipment.
- Maintains records and prepares reports of buildings and grounds activities.
- Implements a preventive maintenance program to retain safe operating condition of buildings, grounds and facilities.
- Assists in preparing budget estimates for custodial and maintenance activities.
- Reviews and approves custodian and maintenance expenditures.
- Supervises purchasing, requisitioning and inventory control of equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ensures school district buildings, grounds and facilities are in full compliance with all regulatory requirements and mandates.
- Refers administrative decisions on maintenance, repair, operational, health, safety and security needs to school administrators.
- Supervises security personnel and operations, as required.
- Supervises motor equipment operators and motor equipment repairs, as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of school buildings, grounds, and facilities maintenance and operations.
- Considerable knowledge of heating plant and air conditioning operations, maintenance, and safety precautions.
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in school buildings, grounds, and facilities maintenance and operations.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of institutional or school building, grounds, and facilities safety and security precautions.
- Knowledge of environmental laws, rules, and regulations affecting the operation and maintenance of school buildings, grounds, and facilities.
- Ability to plan, inspect and supervise the work of a large number of custodians, maintainers, and other building maintenance employees.
- Ability to interpret, prepare and work from blueprints, sketches and diagrams.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, contractors and subordinate personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university;
and
Two (2) years of satisfactory experience supervising school custodial and/or maintenance personnel.
NOTE:
Satisfactory general custodial and/or maintenance experience may be substituted for college education on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four (4) years.
There is no substitution for the two (2) years supervising school custodial and/or maintenance personnel.
