POSITION SUMMARY: The Supervisor of School Safety provides leadership and technical expertise in emergency preparedness and school security, serving as the primary liaison with law enforcement, school administrators, and community agencies to maintain safe, inclusive learning environments.
This role ensures compliance with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) standards and oversees safety drills, crisis planning, investigations, and security systems. The supervisor also monitors threat reporting, conducts site safety assessments, and, in collaboration with principals, supervises and supports, school-based safety personnel (e.g., Safety Advocates), including performance management, coaching, and input on hiring decisions.
The Supervisor serves as the direct representative of Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) and manages the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, ensuring coordination of law enforcement support within schools. The Supervisor leads the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive, districtwide school safety and security program aligned with MCSS guidance and best practices.
Additional responsibilities include coordinating security for major district events, managing emergency management grants, delivering staff training on safety protocols and due process, and overseeing extended suspension conferences. Through proactive planning and collaboration, the Supervisor of School Safety safeguards student well-being and promotes orderly, secure schools across Calvert County Public Schools.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE: At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:
- Bachelor's degree or comparable training and experience in an educational setting related to law enforcement, juvenile justice, or related fields.
- Experience in school safety, emergency management, law enforcement, and legal issues affecting youth and school systems.
- Must obtain and maintain Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) School Safety Coordinator certification in accordance with state law and COMAR requirements.
- Current First Aid and CPR trainer certification preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:
- Serves as the Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) liaison with the Calvert County Sheriff's Department, Maryland State Police, Maryland Center for School Safety, and other governmental agencies as appropriate.
- Serves as the direct representative for CCPS in managing the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, including coordination of assignments, training, and program evaluation.
- Serves as district liaison for the Maryland State Department of Education leadership team for Bullying/Harassment/Intimidation prevention.
- Serves as a member of the CCPS crisis response team and district liaison for the Calvert County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
Serves as a core member of the district Incident Command System (ICS) and ensures alignment with National Incident Management System (NIMS) protocols.
- Engages families and community partners in school safety initiatives and provide education on emergency preparedness and prevention strategies.
- Ensures compliance with Maryland State Department of Education and Maryland Center for School Safety standards, COMAR regulations, and district policies.
- Leads the development, review, and revision of district-level safety policies, crisis plans, and emergency procedures.
- Prepares, implements, and monitors emergency management grants and oversee compliance audits and reporting to district leadership and the Board of Education.
- Analyzes safety trends and data to recommend systemic improvements and long-term strategies for school safety.
- Plans and provides investigation and due process training for administrators and school-based Safety Advocates.
- Delivers staff training on emergency preparedness, crisis response, and safety protocols.
- Coordinates CPR training for CCPS staff and ensure compliance with First Aid and CPR certification requirements.
- Monitors the Maryland Be Safe TIPS Line and lead threat assessment processes, including behavioral risk evaluations.
- Coordinates multidisciplinary behavioral threat assessment processes in collaboration with student services, mental health professionals, and law enforcement partners.
- Collects, analyzes, and monitors data on school safety incidents and arrests.
- Oversees the implementation, access control, evaluation, and continuous improvement of safety and security technologies, including CCTV, visitor management systems, access control, and alarm systems.
- Conducts safety assessments for all CCPS sites and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Monitors schools' compliance with safety drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
- Assists administrators with allegations of criminal and civil acts or other major incidents involving CCPS students or employees.
- Assists with trespassing issues in accordance with Maryland law.
- Coordinates security coverage for Board of Education meetings, county athletic events, and graduation ceremonies.
- Participates in school system investigations to support Human Resources, Finance, and Student Services as necessary.
- Conducts home visits with CCPS Student Service Workers as needed.
- Works with legal counsel, prepares reports, and testifies as required.
- Serves in an on-call capacity to respond to school safety incidents and emergencies outside of standard working hours.
- Supervises assigned safety personnel, including establishing performance expectations, providing coaching, and supporting professional growth.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:
- Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director of Student Services and/or Chief Operations Officer.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and serve in an on-call capacity to respond to safety incidents.
PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS/DEMANDS:
- Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.
- Occasional ability to lift, carry and move parcels weighing up to 25 pounds.
UNUSUAL DEMANDS: Ability to work flexible hours and travel to multiple sites.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied in the current Calvert County Public Schools salary scale.
