This position serves as the Deputy Chief Ranger for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument. This position reports directly to and is supervised by the Chief Ranger of Glen Canyon NRA. As the Deputy Chief Ranger-South the incumbent assists in managing one of the largest, complex and diverse Visitor and Resource Protection programs in the National Park Service (NPS). With 1.25 million acres, Glen Canyon NRA includes the second largest manmade lake in the United States. The park contains 1,960 miles of shoreline, 98 canyons, 6 major developed areas with concession operations, 217 NPS buildings, 6 auto campgrounds (552 spaces), 4 lakeside primitive campground with 700+ sites, 1,828 boat slips/buoys, 407 rental houseboats, and 2,260 boats in dry storage. The park has 6 entrance stations and collects over $2.3 million from over 4.2 million visitors. Glen Canyon has the highest overnight stay of any park in the system. Glen Canyon is located in two states (UT and AZ) with 5 counties. Glen Canyon is an area of proprietary jurisdiction with management and operational issues impacting many outside local, state, tribal and county governments.

Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Law Enforcement Commission: Type I Law Enforcement Commission: Must currently possess or previously held (within the past three years), a FLETC issued Land Management Police Training (LMPT), full Type I Law Enforcement Commission or equivalent; or be qualified to receive a Type I Commission upon appointment by 07/27/2026.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement.

Physical Demands: Duties and responsibilities require long workdays and extensive travel. Ability to work out-of-doors for long periods of time in hot, dry, desert temperatures which range up to 115 degrees F in the summer and in cold snowy conditions which may reach O degrees F in the winter. Must have the ability to respond, in an alert manner, to emergency situations which can occur at any time of the day or night. Must be capable of arduous hiking up to 12 miles in a day over steep, rocky, canyon terrain which ranges in altitude from 3,500 to 10,000 feet above sea level. The incumbent is occasionally required to perform physically rigorous assignments and mandatory physical fitness and medical standards apply to the incumbent of the position.
Work Environment: Work environment includes both indoor and outdoor work. Indoors, the work ranges from active to sedentary in a heated/air-conditioned office environment. Outdoors, work includes walking, driving, boat operations and as a passenger in small aircraft. Incumbent may be exposed to extended periods of direct sunlight, high winds and rough water. May be exposed to hazardous situations such as those encountered in search and rescue operations, fire suppression, onsite safety inspections in hazardous areas and law enforcement situations.
