The Acute C.A.R.E. Social Work Supervisor is expected to be responsible for the clinical and administrative operation of the unit. Incumbent is also responsible for education and training of staff, in conjunction with other VA professionals, to promote the transition from maintenance models of treatment to the contemporary recovery model. The incumbent is expected to adhere to service standards regarding matters of timeliness, accuracy, and compliance with procedures and quantity of work produced. The incumbent must form a cohesive team of staff from a variety of disciplines and supervisory chains of authority to provide an effective, recovery-oriented treatment program. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • The Acute C.A.R.E. Social Work Supervisor maintains primary responsibility for the development and implementation of all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). However, the Social Work Supervisor must work with several different services and programs (i.e. Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Nursing, Nutrition, and Pharmacy) to develop discipline-specific procedures.
  • The incumbent has oversight and administrative authority over all programming at the Acute C.A.R.E. Unit, and participates in program development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Additionally, the incumbent works closely with Mental Health Service leadership to develop strategic plans for the growth and development of the Acute C.A.R.E. Unit.
  • The incumbent is expected to remain engaged with service and hospital activities by serving on committees, participating in workgroups, and engaging in educational activities for staff and trainees.
  • The incumbent also works with the service and hospital Accreditation Committees to ensure that all unit programming, documentation, and the physical environment of care meet or exceed current standards.
  • The incumbent will also be responsible for supervising staff administratively aligned under the Mental Health Service, Psychologists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors, and Peer Support staff.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 08:00am - 04:30pm

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Education: Have a masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may NOT be substituted for the masters degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
  • Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.

GS-12 Supervisory Social Workercandidates must have the following:

  • Education and Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-masters degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
  • Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

  • Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.

  • Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services.
  • Ability to provide staff training and development.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.

Preferred Experience: Inpatient clinical experience conducting individual/group interventions, crisis intervention and medical/health psychology interventions.

Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment may require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment.
