The Surface / Pattern Designer is responsible for creating original surface artwork, textile prints, repeat patterns, and visual concepts for products across apparel, home décor, consumer goods, packaging, and related product categories. This role develops trend-driven designs while ensuring alignment with brand identity, product strategies, and market demands.
The Surface / Pattern Designer collaborates with creative teams, product developers, merchandising teams, and manufacturers to deliver high-quality print and pattern collections in a fully remote environment.
This is a fully remote position; however, applicants must currently reside in the United States and be legally authorized to work in the United States. Applications from individuals residing outside the United States will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Creative Development
- Create original surface designs, textile prints, illustrations, and repeat patterns for products and collections
- Develop seasonal collections aligned with market trends and brand direction
- Produce artwork suitable for digital and print production processes
- Create colorways, pattern variations, and repeat layouts
Trend Research & Product Development
- Conduct market research on trends, colors, consumer preferences, and competitive products
- Translate trend insights into commercially viable design concepts
- Collaborate with product development teams on product specifications and execution
- Support concept development from ideation through production
Production & Technical Preparation
- Prepare production-ready artwork and files for manufacturing partners
- Ensure technical accuracy for print repeats, color separations, and formatting requirements
- Maintain organized asset libraries and design documentation
- Support revisions and quality reviews during production cycles
Collaboration & Brand Alignment
- Work closely with merchandising, marketing, and product teams
- Ensure consistency with brand standards and creative direction
- Participate in design reviews and product launch planning
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Textile Design, Surface Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, or related field preferred
- 3–6 years of experience in surface design, textile design, print design, or pattern development
- Strong portfolio demonstrating surface design and repeat pattern work
- Excellent illustration, composition, and color development skills
- Knowledge of production processes and print preparation standards
- Strong creative thinking and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with design software including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Creative Cloud
- Familiarity with textile and repeat design workflows
- Experience in apparel, home goods, consumer products, stationery, or licensing industries
- Hand illustration, watercolor, digital painting, or mixed media experience preferred
- Knowledge of print production and manufacturing specifications
Compensation
Annual Salary Range:$70,000 – $100,000 USD, depending on experience, portfolio quality, and industry specialization
Estimated Hourly Equivalent:$34 – $48 per hour
