MITRE's Integrated Surface Transportation Division works at the intersection of federal policy, emerging technology, and national infrastructure-partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation, state and local agencies, and industry to advance the safety, efficiency, and resilience of the nation's surface transportation system. Our portfolio spans four interconnected areas: transportation data infrastructure, automated and connected vehicles, data trust and safety, and connected infrastructure. We serve as a trusted, independent voice for sponsors navigating some of the most consequential and complex challenges in transportation-from deploying data standards across multi-state corridors to building the governance frameworks that will shape how automation and analytics enter the transportation system. We are expanding our team to meet growing sponsor demand for rigorous, independent guidance on how emerging technologies can be responsibly and effectively integrated into surface transportation operations, infrastructure, and policy.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Senior Principal - Surface Transportation Strategy & Innovation
The Senior Principal is a senior transportation technologist and strategist and a key member of MITRE's Integrated Surface Transportation Division. This is a rare combination of strategic, technical, and analytical strength paired with the polish to advise federal sponsors directly-a multi-domain expert who can shape and innovate across the division's entire work program: transportation data infrastructure, automated and connected vehicles, data trust and safety, and connected infrastructure.
In this role, you will serve as a bridge between MITRE's deep internal capabilities in artificial intelligence, data science, and advanced analytics and the complex, real-world challenges facing transportation sponsors. You will not build AI systems from scratch-you will know how to identify where AI-enabled approaches offer genuine value, translate those opportunities into actionable sponsor guidance, and partner with MITRE's technical labs to bring the right capabilities to bear. Your credibility will come from deep transportation domain expertise, not from AI credentials alone.
