Position Reports to: Director of Surgery
Department Description: Wilson Health's Surgical Services Department performs more than 4,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries and other procedures annually in the fields of gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, general surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, urology, podiatry, plastic surgery and endoscopy, as well as radiology interventional procedures. The department is staffed by board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists, highly skilled registered nurses, surgical technologists, sterile processing technicians, medical assistants and X-ray technologists.
Job Summary: Cares for patients in the Operating Room/Endoscopy under the direction of the Registered Nurse and supervision of medical staff. Works to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures ensuring the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for each individual surgical procedure.
Effectively functions as the scrub person for the surgical procedure:
Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
Scrubs, gowns, gloves
Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
Performs appropriate counts with the circulator at a minimum prior to the operation and before the incision is closed
Knows legal responsibilities and the reason for 100% accurate sponge counts.
Verbalizes procedure for an incorrect sponge count.
Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistant
Helps in draping the sterile field
Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure
Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
Properly handles all surgical specimens
Prepares sterile dressings
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
Assists other members with terminal cleaning of operating room
Assists in prepping room for the next patient
Obtains appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedure
Opens sterile supplies
Actively participates in "Time Out"
Assists with patient transfers as needed
Assesses comfort and safety measures and provides verbal and tactile reassurances to the patient
Anticipates additional supplies needed for the procedure
Properly handles specimen
Secures dressing after incision is closed
