Job Summary and Qualifications

.Position Summary:

The Surgical Certified First Assistant (CFA) is a specially trained individual who is able to participate in and actively assist the surgeon in completing operations safely and expeditiously by helping to provide exposure, maintain hemostasis, and other technical functions. provides assisting services in both the preparation for and the performance of surgery. The CFA is experienced in all aspects of aseptic technique, setting up the required equipment and sterile supplies as needed for their assigned cases, pulling cases as needed, and breaking down cases at the end of the procedure. He/she is knowledgeable regarding instrumentation, equipment and supply needs for all types of surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to tissue handling, wound retraction/exposure, positioning, aseptic practices, providing hemostasis and suturing of tissue, as directed. Will performs delegated duties consistent with his/her scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery.

The CFA is able to cover multiple complex specialties including but not limited to: Robotics, Complex GI, Colorectal, Liver, Thoracic and all types of Surgical Oncology. Must maintain competency in all areas required and be self-sufficient in ensuring that he/she meets expectations of all facilities/surgeons that h/she is covering.

Additional responsibilities may include precepting and coordination of resources. The CFA Market Float is required to be available for call for multiple specialties and facilities (across HealthONE) at the hours requested/needed for patient care. When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor such as scrub technician, multi-skilled tech or other areas for which qualified.

II.Position Requirements:

A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Registration as a Surgical Assistant by Colorado Division of Registration (DORA) and current certification as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), National Surgical Assistant

Association (NSAA) or American Board of Surgical Assistants. Current BLS Certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

B. Education: Graduation from a school of surgical technology approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and completion of a First Assistant Program accredited through ARC/STSA, a collaborative effort of ASA, ACS, and SASA by CAAHEP

C. Experience: Minimum of two years of experience as a Surgery Technician.

D. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Advanced knowledge in the scrub role and demonstrated proficiency in multiple service lines/specialties. Expert specialized skills in multiple complex specialties including but not limited to: Robotics, Complex GI, Colorectal, Liver, Thoracic and all types of Surgical Oncology. Demonstrates leadership qualities. Displays appropriate judgement and problem solving skills. Demonstrates good organizational skills. Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external customers. Is authorized to handle medications, syringes, needles, etc. and is accountable to the registered nurse for oversight of this practice. Demonstrated competence with patient care information systems including Meditech, and Microsoft Office programs. Ability to educate staff using adult learning principles.
