JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary of Essential Functions

• Administratively responsible for all operations and activities within the OR.
• Supervises Coordinators, Charge Nurses, and staff. Coordinates activities of assigned services according to United Regional policies, objectives, and philosophies.
• Performs a wide variety of duties, to include accepting responsibility for the direction, control, and planning of activities in the OR.
• Recognizes emergency, critical, or unusual situations and is able to initiate appropriate intervention in a calm and efficient manner.
• Demonstrates excellent communication skills, professional judgment, critical thinking, and sound reasoning in daily operations of the OR and decision-making in the OR.
• Functions as a self-starter who is able to identify departmental needs, initiate appropriate actions, and follow through to completion with minimal direction.

Educational Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing strongly preferred.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Qualifications and Licenses

• Registered with the Board of Nursing for the State of Texas. ACLS and PALS Certified within 6 months of hire, if not already certified.

Certification/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Previous experience in perioperative nursing with years of experience in OR.
• Certification in Perioperative Nursing preferred.
• Ability to perform under stress and utilize excellent critical thinking skills, reasoning, and problem-solving techniques when necessary.
• Demonstrates competency in the direct and indirect care of patients in service area(s).
• Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills in interaction with patients, families, visitors, staff, physicians, and other members of the health care team.
• Must be a self-starter with the ability to prioritize responsibilities, anticipate operational needs, and take initiative in a fast-paced perioperative environment.
• Must demonstrate sound reasoning, professional judgment, and the ability to evaluate complex situations and determine appropriate actions.
• Must have basic computer skills - Epic, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Teams, Etc.

Physical Requirements

• Lengthy periods of standing.
• Move gurneys, carts, and equipment.
• Assists with the positioning of surgical patients for surgery.
• Carry and lift instrument sets, trays, and various items of equipment. Medium strength requirement. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Involves minimal temperature and moderate noise level changes.
• Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-to-eye coordination.
• Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and direction to personnel who perform a variety of job functions.
• Works collaboratively to provide age-specific standard of care to the child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient.
• Coordinates assignment of duties and nursing activities with Scheduling Specialty Coordinators, charge nurse, and surgery educator based on competency level of staff. Also, works to coordinate with all other peri-operative departments as needed.
• Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, families, visitors, staff, physicians, and other Allied Health Care providers.
• Utilizes critical thinking skills and sound reasoning to evaluate immediate and long-term problems/issues and takes appropriate corrective action in a timely manner.
• Demonstrates initiative as a self-starter by proactively identifying operational concerns, barriers to workflow, staff needs, and opportunities for improvement.
• Makes daily rounds in department to assess patient care activities, staff competence, compliance with policies, problems/issues, and physician issues. Ensures reporting and evaluation of all incidents involving unsafe practice, unsafe conditions, errors, accidents, or "near misses."
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of department and United Regional policies, AORN Recommended Practices and Guidelines, state, federal, and Joint Commission regulations.
